About the role
Join Brex and own the end-to-end delivery of mission-critical infrastructure that powers our Task Workflows Platform. You will design and scale the foundational systems that drive core user experiences across our platform suite. This role involves building and evolving multi-channel notifications, collaborative commenting, and dynamic workflow rule builders. You will tackle complex full-stack challenges from backend rule-evaluation engines to frontend workflow builder interfaces. You will also play a pivotal role in transitioning our task orchestration from a centralized, generic experience into tailored, purpose-built solutions for specific product domains. Your work will directly shape AI-driven workflows and productivity tools used by tens of thousands of companies worldwide.

What you'll do
Architect and implement scalable backend APIs and rule-evaluation engines that power custom automation workflows for Brex customers.
Design and build intuitive frontend user experiences for domain-specific task interfaces and workflow builders using modern web technologies.
Own problems end-to-end, including user experience design, data models, scalability, operability, and ongoing metrics analysis.
Collaborate closely with user-facing teams such as Sales and Support to deeply understand customer needs and translate them into technical solutions.
Lead the evolution of our task orchestration infrastructure to support highly tailored workflows for specific product domains.
Tune and polish features to a high degree of excellence, ensuring reliability, performance, and a seamless user experience.
Uphold high engineering standards by bringing consistency to codebases, infrastructure, and processes across the platform.
Provide technical leadership by driving roadmap direction, performing architectural design, and mentoring engineers within the team.
Identify and implement improvements in reliability and performance to support Brex's global scale across markets.
Work side-by-side with cross-functional partners to ensure delivered solutions align with product strategy and customer expectations.
Contribute to broader product experiences by leveraging AI to streamline user workflows and enhance productivity tools.
Support the continuous evolution of web and mobile productivity tools that serve our diverse customer base.
Engage in hands-on coding across full-stack layers to deliver complete features and platform enhancements.
Act as a technical owner for platform initiatives, ensuring successful delivery from conception through production deployment.
Requirements
7+ years of professional experience designing, developing, and deploying full-stack products in a production environment.
Strong proficiency in backend programming languages such as Java, Kotlin, or Python for building scalable services.
Experience architecting, building, and maintaining scalable, high-availability distributed systems that handle real-world traffic loads.
Experience designing and optimizing SQL and/or NoSQL databases, including data modeling, query performance tuning, and schema design.
Experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs and/or GraphQL services that support complex business logic.
Experience with modern frontend technologies and tools including ES6+, React, TypeScript, and Webpack for rich user interfaces.
Proven ability to own problems end-to-end, from initial requirements through implementation, testing, and post-deployment monitoring.
Strong understanding of software engineering principles, including clean code, testing, version control, and collaborative development practices.
Nice to have
Experience with AI-driven workflows or automation platforms is a plus.
Familiarity with Brex's product domain and financial workflows is preferred.
Contributions to open source or public-facing technical projects demonstrate thought leadership.
Practical notes
This role is based in the San Francisco office and follows a hybrid work model requiring a minimum of three coordinated days in the office per week on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.
As a perk, the company offers up to four weeks per year of fully remote work.
Travel is not required for this position.
