About the role
This position centers on leading and owning the tax strategy and compliance posture for Block's most significant corporate development initiatives. The hire will be accountable for driving the global M&A, investment, and post-closing integration tax agenda from initial analysis through final execution. They will own the technical tax assessment and documentation for all transactions to ensure alignment with corporate objectives and regulatory requirements. This role requires deep collaboration with cross-functional partners to translate complex business strategies into actionable and compliant tax outcomes. The individual will synthesize intricate analyses into clear guidance for senior leadership and external stakeholders. They will establish and maintain rigorous frameworks for managing federal and state income tax planning across the enterprise. Ultimately, this position owns the integrity of Block's tax reporting and positioning in connection with major strategic transactions.
Key facts
What you'll do
Lead the end-to-end management of Block's global M&A, investments, and post-closing integration/compliance activities.
Partner with internal functional teams, tax colleagues, and external advisors on the tax aspects of acquisitions, dispositions, investments, structuring, and integration to ensure accurate reflection in tax filings.
Perform sophisticated tax modeling and quantitative analyses, including Sections 382 and 383 assessments, stock basis calculations, and other transaction-related computations.
Research complex and novel tax issues, advise cross-functional stakeholders from HR, Treasury, Legal, Corporate Development, and Accounting, and prepare detailed technical memoranda supporting filing positions and strategic planning.
Manage the full lifecycle of income tax audits, from initial planning and IDR response through to audit resolution and compliance.
Support special tax projects, including new product evaluations, Treasury and Capital Markets initiatives, and comprehensive state income tax planning.
Evaluate and implement tax-efficient structures for corporate development and investment activities while ensuring adherence to regulatory frameworks.
Coordinate with external counsel and advisors to align on tax strategies, risk mitigation, and the optimization of transaction economics.
Develop and maintain robust tax documentation and position papers to support both current and future examinations and audits.
Champion continuous improvement in tax processes and controls related to M&A and investment activities.
Provide thought leadership and training to internal teams on evolving tax matters and their implications for Block's business objectives.
Contribute to the development of policies and procedures that enhance the governance of global tax planning and compliance.
Requirements
Bring a minimum of 5+ years of relevant experience in M&A tax, encompassing complex federal income tax planning and tax research within a Big Four accounting firm, law firm, or a large multinational corporate environment.
Possess a thorough knowledge of US federal income tax principles, including subchapter C structures and consolidated return regulations.
Demonstrate excellent tax research capabilities and the ability to analyze and solve highly complex tax problems.

Exhibit strong project management skills and an intrinsic enjoyment for owning multiple high-priority projects simultaneously.

Nice to have
Possess a fundamental working knowledge of all non-income based federal, state and local, US international, and foreign tax regimes.
Have experience with taxation of cryptocurrencies, financial products, and tax information reporting.
Bring experience with Treasury-led initiatives, such as capital market transactions, global cash pooling, and intercompany lending.
Have direct experience managing Federal, state, and local income tax audits and other tax controversies.
Hold a CPA/MS Taxation or JD/LLM in Tax.
