Sales Engineer, Accounting Solutions
Job description
Sales Engineer, Accounting Solutions at Basis Ai.
About the role
This position converts accounting workflows into automated demonstrations and enablement materials behind the scenes. It powers sales motions for large accounting firms by combining accounting procedure knowledge with technical automation skills. The role is based in the NYC, Flatiron office with in-person team presence.
Data roles turn raw information into decisions. Analysts query databases and build dashboards. Data scientists build models that predict outcomes. Data engineers build the pipelines that move and store data. All three work closely with business teams and need a mix of statistics, coding, and communication. Nearly every modern company runs on data teams, from startups to banks. A strong portfolio of past analyses matters more than degrees in many hiring decisions.
Key facts
What you'll do
Automated build processes handle accounting, finance, audit, and tax workflows to power client demonstrations. Custom procedures within Basis are created to showcase real accounting use cases for specific client engagements. Basis product updates are tracked and translated into demo-ready assets for sales cycles. Real customer workflows are reflected in demos produced together with Sales, Product, and Engineering teams.
Requirements
Two to four years in accounting, audit, tax, or a related finance function are required for this position. Hands-on experience automating tasks using Excel, Python, or similar is required to execute repetitive workflows. Complex accounting concepts are distilled into clear instruction sets as a strong writing expectation for documentation. New software and platforms are learned quickly by technically curious individuals in fast-paced settings. Multiple projects are managed without close supervision by detail-oriented and self-directed staff. A startup mindset thrives in ambiguity, moves fast, and owns outcomes for deliverables.
Nice to have
Experience with accounting software such as QBO, NetSuite, Xero, or Sage is a bonus for certain engagements. Practice lines across accounting/finance, audit, and tax are handled by those with prior experience in similar environments. Sales support, solutions, or enablement roles provide background familiarity with client workflows.
Practical notes
The position is based in the NYC, Flatiron office and requires in-person team presence. Typical interview steps
Data interviews commonly include a SQL or coding exercise, a statistics question, and a case study. Candidates may be asked to design a metric, interpret an experiment, or build a small model. Some companies give a take-home analysis. Expect questions about past projects and the business impact of your work. Interviewers often evaluate how you communicate uncertainty and business impact, not only the math. Bringing a clean write-up of a past analysis to the interview is well received.
Good to know
Sales engineering roles convert technical capabilities into customer value through demonstration and enablement. Automation of repetitive tasks across office productivity suites is common in modern accounting technology. Fluency in both technical systems and accounting procedures supports cross-functional collaboration in production environments.
Questions to ask
Worth asking in any interview: how the team measures success, who the role works with daily, what the onboarding looks like, and what the company is trying to achieve this year. Asking what past hires did well is a strong final question. Keep the list short and pick the questions that matter most to you.
Career growth
Data careers grow toward senior analyst, staff data scientist, or data engineering lead. Many professionals specialize in machine learning, analytics, or infrastructure. Cross-functional work with product and engineering teams becomes more important at senior levels. The field changes quickly, so continuous learning is part of the job. Professionals who can translate numbers into decisions tend to advance fastest.
