About the role
The Affordable Compliance Manager is a vital member of the compliance team, responsible for overseeing and ensuring adherence to federal, state, and agency regulations related to affordable housing programs within a designated portfolio. This role involves working closely with operational teams, clients, and compliance personnel to maintain regulatory standards, prepare for audits, and implement effective compliance processes. The manager will serve as an expert resource, providing guidance on complex regulatory issues, mentoring team members, and supporting the organization in mitigating risks associated with non-compliance. What you'll do
- Oversee and manage compliance activities related to affordable housing programs, ensuring all properties and operations adhere to federal, state, and agency regulations.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of changes in affordable housing regulations and share relevant updates with the Compliance Department to ensure ongoing compliance.
- Prepare, review, and submit quarterly and annual reports accurately and on time, ensuring all documentation meets regulatory standards.
- Maintain detailed compliance trackers, logs, and departmental resources to facilitate audit readiness and ongoing monitoring.
- Conduct peer reviews of certifications, rent calculations, and other documentation to verify accuracy and compliance.
- Serve as a primary point of contact for Compliance Managers, providing expert guidance and support on complex compliance issues and regulatory interpretations.
- Assist in the preparation of documentation required for agency audits, including organizing files, reports, and supporting materials.
- Support property visits and inspections conducted by regulatory agencies, ensuring properties are prepared and compliant during reviews.
- Communicate effectively with Compliance staff, Regional Management, property teams, and clients to clarify requirements, provide updates, and resolve compliance issues promptly.
- Participate in client strategy meetings to discuss compliance status, upcoming regulatory changes, and best practices for maintaining compliance across properties.
- Mentor Compliance Managers and other team members, providing training and guidance to enhance their understanding of compliance requirements and processes.
- Identify training needs within the compliance team and develop or recommend appropriate training programs to improve overall team performance.
- Collaborate with other departments such as property management, leasing, and finance to streamline compliance processes and address any operational issues that may impact regulatory adherence.
- Work closely with the Vice President of Compliance to develop and implement action plans for addressing instances of non-compliance, including corrective measures and follow-up procedures.
- Monitor ongoing compliance activities and conduct periodic reviews to ensure continuous adherence to regulatory standards.
- Support the organization's efforts in maintaining ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) compliance where applicable, and ensure all documentation and processes align with these standards.
- Assist in developing and updating internal policies and procedures related to affordable housing compliance to reflect current regulations and best practices.
- Participate in internal and external audits, providing necessary documentation and support to facilitate smooth audit processes.
- Keep detailed records of compliance activities, audit findings, and corrective actions taken to ensure transparency and accountability.
- Stay informed about industry trends, regulatory updates, and best practices to continuously improve compliance strategies and processes.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent education and experience preferred; relevant experience may substitute for formal education.
- Extensive experience in affordable housing compliance, property management, or related fields, with a strong understanding of federal, state, and agency regulations.
- Proven ability to interpret complex regulatory requirements and translate them into actionable procedures.
- Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and documentation simultaneously.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, capable of explaining complex compliance issues clearly and effectively.
- Proficiency in property management software and Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while collaborating effectively with team members and stakeholders.
- Demonstrated leadership skills, with experience mentoring or training team members.
- Willingness to travel occasionally to properties, client meetings, and training sessions as needed.
- Attention to detail and a proactive approach to identifying and resolving compliance issues.
- Ability to adapt to changing regulations and organizational priorities quickly and efficiently.
- Knowledge of ITAR regulations and experience supporting compliance efforts related to these standards is a plus.

- Previous experience in a leadership or supervisory role within compliance.
- Familiarity with SharePoint or similar document management and collaboration tools.
- Experience working with government agencies or in audit preparation and support.
- Knowledge of additional regulatory frameworks relevant to affordable housing or property management.
- Certification in compliance, property management, or related fields (e.g., CAM, CPM, or similar).
