Senior Software Engineer, AI Developer Experience
Job description
About the role
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to integrate and improve our AI developer experience so that engineers at Asana can use AI to increase their velocity. You will own the design and delivery of AI-augmented workflows and systems that help coding agents deeply understand the codebase, adhere to engineering practices, and enable Asana engineers to complete software development tasks faster and with more confidence. This role is embedded within the AI Developer Productivity team where you will build the next generation of AI-powered developer tools spanning editors, IDEs, CLIs, code review, and both cloud and local coding agents. You will partner closely with product and design to translate complex requirements into robust, scalable implementations that directly enhance engineering productivity. The work you ship will set the standard for how AI assistance is integrated into developer workflows across the company.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design and build AI-augmented workflows and systems that help coding agents understand the codebase, follow engineering practices, and enable Asana engineers to complete software development tasks faster and with more confidence.
Design and scale autonomous cloud agents that take on complex, multi-step engineering tasks to reduce toil and enable engineers to focus on higher-leverage work.
Build and refine IDE, editor, and CLI integrations that make AI-assisted development feel intuitive in engineers' daily work.
Create reusable agent skills, tools, context, and integrations that teams across Asana can build on rather than reinvent.
Improve AI-assisted code review workflows so engineers get faster, higher-quality feedback before and during review.
Drive adoption of AI developer tools across engineering through usability improvements, measurement, documentation, and enablement.
Collaborate with cross-functional partners to define and prioritize features that maximize the impact of AI-assisted development on engineering velocity.
Implement robust evaluation frameworks and quality gates for AI-generated outputs to ensure reliability and correctness in production environments.
Contribute to the architecture of scalable backend services that support agent execution, tool use, and secure access to codebases.
Own end-to-end delivery of developer-facing features, from discovery and prototyping to rollout and post-launch iteration.
Work closely with product managers to translate user needs into technical requirements and prioritize based on impact and feasibility.
Establish best practices and patterns for building secure, maintainable, and observable AI developer tools.
Support and mentor other engineers by sharing expertise in integrations, tooling, and emerging AI development workflows.
Engage with the broader developer community through talks, documentation, and open source contributions where appropriate.
Continuously evaluate new AI technologies and techniques to identify opportunities for improving the Asana engineering experience.
Requirements
5+ years of working in large codebases.
Experience building developer tools, internal platforms, infrastructure, IDE/editor integrations, CLIs, or workflow automation.
Hands-on experience with AI-assisted development tools (such as Cursor, Claude Code, or Codex), or extending coding agents, MCP-based integrations, AI-powered code review systems, or agent skill/tool ecosystems.
Experience building evaluation and quality frameworks for AI-generated outputs.
Strong technical judgment and systems design skills, with the ability to make pragmatic tradeoffs in ambiguous or rapidly changing environments.
Demonstrates curiosity about AI tools and emerging technologies, with a willingness to learn and leverage them to enhance productivity, collaboration, or decision-making.
Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Comfortable navigating ambiguity and making decisions with incomplete information while maintaining a bias toward action.
Practical notes
Office-centric hybrid schedule with standard in-office days on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday. Most Asanas have the option to work from home on Wednesdays. Working from home on Fridays depends on the type of work you do and the teams with which you partner. If you are interviewing for this role, your recruiter will share more about the in-office requirements.
