Key facts
What you'll do
- Lead guided excursions through the Amazon rainforest, showcasing its unique flora and fauna while ensuring the safety and enjoyment of all participants.
- Provide engaging and informative commentary on the ecological significance of various species and habitats encountered during excursions.
- Conduct pre-excursion briefings to prepare guests for their adventure, including safety protocols and what to expect during the trip.
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with guests, encouraging questions and fostering a sense of curiosity about the natural world.
- Collaborate with other team members to design and implement educational programs that enhance the guest experience and promote environmental awareness.
- Monitor and document wildlife sightings and ecological changes during excursions, contributing to ongoing research and conservation efforts.
- Assist in the maintenance of equipment and resources necessary for excursions, ensuring everything is in optimal condition for guest use.
- Stay updated on local environmental issues, conservation efforts, and the latest research in ecology to provide guests with accurate and relevant information.
- Participate in training sessions and workshops to enhance your guiding skills and knowledge of the Amazon ecosystem.
- Provide feedback to management regarding guest experiences and suggestions for improving excursion offerings.
- Engage with local communities to promote sustainable tourism practices and foster positive relationships between visitors and residents.
- Ensure compliance with all safety regulations and environmental guidelines during excursions, promoting responsible tourism practices.
Requirements
- A degree in environmental science, biology, ecology, or a related field is preferred.
- At least two years of experience in a guiding role, preferably in a natural setting or ecotourism environment.
- Strong knowledge of Amazonian ecosystems, wildlife, and conservation issues.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse audiences.
- Proficiency in both English and Spanish; additional languages are a plus.
- First Aid and CPR certification is required; Wilderness First Responder certification is a plus.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, to accommodate guest schedules.
- Strong physical fitness and the ability to navigate challenging terrain in various weather conditions.
- A passion for nature and a commitment to promoting environmental stewardship.
Nice to have
- Experience with birdwatching, wildlife photography, or other nature-related hobbies that can enhance guest experiences.
- Familiarity with local indigenous cultures and their relationship with the environment.
- Previous experience in a freelance or self-employed capacity, demonstrating the ability to manage time effectively and work independently.
Skills & tools
- Strong leadership and group management skills to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for all participants.
- Proficient in using outdoor equipment such as binoculars, GPS devices, and field guides.
- Familiarity with social media platforms for promoting excursions and engaging with potential guests.
- Knowledge of sustainable tourism practices and environmental conservation strategies.

- This position is based in Iquitos, Peru, and requires the ability to travel to various excursion sites within the Amazon region.
- The freelance nature of this role allows for flexible scheduling; however, candidates should be prepared for variable hours based on guest bookings.
