Staff+ Software Engineer, Platform

About the role

Anthropic is hiring experienced engineers to join their Platform organization, which builds the foundational systems that accelerate product development across the company. You will scope complex multi-month projects, drive alignment across teams in ambiguous problem spaces, and make architectural decisions that shape how Anthropic builds and scales its products. Your work will directly impact the platform used by hundreds of thousands of companies and engineers daily.

What you'll do

• Build and maintain core infrastructure including service mesh, observability systems, deployment pipelines, and shared libraries (Service Infra team)
• Develop cloud-agnostic tooling, cross-cloud networking, and multi-region deployment capabilities (Platform Portability team)
• Own performance, reliability, and efficiency of the Claude API serving path, partnering with inference and safeguards teams (Platform Intelligence team)
• Work on the MCP proxy for tool calls, OAuth and token management, and maintain official Python and TypeScript SDKs for the MCP spec under the Linux Foundation (Connectivity team)
• Build billing infrastructure that turns product usage into revenue across Claude.ai, Developer Platform, and Claude Code (Billing Platform team)
• Create secure execution environments for Claude's agentic capabilities including code execution, web browsing, and computer use (Sandboxing team)
• Enable developers to securely give Claude access to their data with automatic processing and retrieval (Platform Serving team)
• Build infrastructure and APIs for agentic applications including Claude Managed Agents, tool use, multi-step reasoning, durable sessions, and long-running task execution (Agentic Systems team)
• Develop identity and authentication infrastructure including user auth, authorization, RBAC, and SSO (Auth and Identity team)
• Transform the Claude API into a cloud-native managed product deployable cross-cloud with enterprise-grade security and compliance (Platform Distribution team)
• Build identity and verification systems including KYC/KYB, trust grant issuance, and end-user verification (Platform Safety team)

Requirements

• Minimum 8 years of practical experience as a backend or platform engineer building scalable distributed systems
• Experience operating at tech lead level or equivalent
• Strong fundamentals in service-oriented architectures, networking, and systems design
• Proficiency in Python, Go, Rust, or similar systems languages
• Experience with cloud infrastructure (GCP, AWS, or Azure) and container orchestration (Kubernetes)
• Ability to take full ownership from design through deployment and operations
• Capacity to navigate ambiguity and make sound technical decisions independently
• Experience in both early-stage (0 to 1) and mature team or company settings
• Product-focused approach to platform work with attention to scalability and usability
• Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience in a relevant field

Nice to have

• Experience with multi-cloud networking
• Background in distributed systems, cloud-native products, developer tools, or external developer-facing products
• Experience owning both technical vision and execution of foundational platform systems end to end
• Background in OAuth, API gateways, multi-tenant platforms, or enterprise products (particularly relevant for Connectivity team)
• Experience building for containerized workloads and products serving millions of customers (particularly relevant for Sandboxing team)
