Staff Software Engineer, Web Platform
Job description
About the role
Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems. You will own the foundational web platform that powers Claude.ai and directly enable every other team at Anthropic to ship with speed and confidence. This role focuses on designing and shipping shared components, backend-for-frontend APIs, and the tooling that keeps our web surfaces running reliably at scale. You will reduce friction across the entire organization by improving build, deploy, and testing pipelines while maintaining high standards for performance and stability. Your contributions will have outsized leverage, as the systems you build will be used by dozens of product teams to create new features and experiences.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Improve developer velocity across the organization by reducing friction in our build, deploy, and testing pipelines.
- Identify and resolve latency and reliability issues, and help establish high standards that the rest of the platform team can build upon.
- Design and build shared UI components, libraries, and abstractions used by product teams to ship consistently and efficiently on web and mobile.
- Partner closely with product engineering teams to understand their needs, unblock them when possible, and shape platform investments around where the most impact lies.
- Maintain and evolve documentation and tooling that make the platform approachable for engineers joining or building on top of it.
- Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to translate product requirements into robust, reusable platform solutions.
- Implement observability, metrics, and tracing strategies to gain insight into platform usage and performance.
- Optimize client-server API contracts to balance flexibility, consistency, and efficiency across web and mobile clients.
- Drive automation in CI/CD, build systems, and deployment processes to reduce manual effort and increase reliability.
- Contribute to the design of backend-for-frontend services that serve the needs of multiple product interfaces.
- Refactor and extend shared infrastructure to support new product requirements without breaking existing experiences.
- Champion best practices around security, accessibility, and performance within the platform.
- Work closely with SRE and infrastructure teams to ensure platform services remain highly available and scalable.
- Mentor other engineers on the team to elevate the overall quality and maintainability of the codebase.
- Participate in on-call rotations to respond to platform incidents and support production debugging.
Requirements
- Have strong practical skills in modern web technologies (React, TypeScript or comparable frameworks) and experience designing or consuming APIs that serve frontend applications.
- Care about developer experience and have a track record of building things that make other engineers more productive.
- Have solid instincts around reliability, observability, and performance - and enjoy operationalizing those instincts in production systems.
- Thrive in fast-paced, collaborative environments and enjoy working closely with cross-functional partners.
- Pick up slack, even if it goes outside your job description.
- Have 5+ years of software engineering experience, with significant time spent building shared platforms, developer tools, or infrastructure that other engineers rely on.
- Demonstrate a history of delivering high-quality software in production environments with strong attention to detail.
- Show the ability to learn and apply new technologies quickly while maintaining a broad understanding of the full web stack.
- Communicate clearly and constructively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Nice to have
- Building shared component libraries, design systems or reusable UI infrastructure.
- API design and client-server architecture patterns that balance flexibility with consistency across client platforms.
- Performance optimization and latency reduction in production web applications.
- CI/CD, build systems, and or deployment automation.
- Observability and monitoring (e.g. metrics, logging, tracing).
Practical notes
- Full-time position located in San Francisco, CA.
- This role may require travel as needed for team or company events.
- Candidates must be authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship for this position.
