Senior Power Electronics Engineer
Job description
About the role
This position is responsible for owning the complete high-power electrical architecture of Antares microreactor plants from a system-level perspective. The hire will define the stable operating envelope for the common DC bus under all transient and steady-state conditions. They will establish the fault handling strategy that keeps the system safe while maximizing availability across diverse environments. The role requires leading the technical evaluation and selection of critical power conversion suppliers. You will own the roadmap that scales power from single units to multi-reactor installations in remote or grid-tied locations. The position demands rigorous verification that all vendor components function as a unified system rather than as isolated parts. You will translate test data from high-power campaigns directly into hardened architectural decisions. The role shapes the long-term evolution of power electronics technology and the physical layout of equipment pads.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Architect the common DC bus that connects energy storage, reactor power conversion, and grid-tied inverters, defining voltage levels, topology, sectionalizing logic, protection coordination, grounding strategy, and sizing margins.
- Design the expansion architecture that allows the system to scale from one reactor to many, including paralleling rules, fault isolation procedures, and control hierarchy for growing fault current levels.
- Ensure system-level stability and compatibility of high voltage components from multiple vendors across the full spectrum of reactor operating conditions.
- Own the implementation of high voltage system functions such as battery management, bus precharge, isolation monitoring, power quality, grid-forming and grid-following modes, and emergency shutdown sequences.
- Define and validate behavior for every critical fault scenario including load rejection, short circuits, ground faults, and converter failures, ensuring protection coordination remains intact.
- Specify, build, and maintain the high power distribution test system at Antares headquarters, coordinating with facilities, test teams, and controls groups to enable rigorous validation.
- Convert test campaign results into design decisions, correlating models with reality and feeding learnings back into architecture and supplier requirements.
- Act as the technical owner for all power electronics suppliers, managing specifications, design reviews, integration issues, and strategic relationships for energy storage, DC/DC, inverters, and AC/DC conversion.
- Drive the electrical development roadmap by assessing emerging technologies and making build-versus-buy decisions that determine the next generation of power systems.
- Collaborate with harnessing and mechanical engineers to optimize equipment pad layouts for voltage drop, inductance, EMI control, thermal performance, serviceability, and arc flash safety.
Requirements
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a closely related technical field as a baseline for advanced power systems work.
- Bring a minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in power electronics or high power electrical systems, with proof of owning system architecture from design through hardware bring-up.
- Demonstrate direct experience designing DC bus architectures that interconnect multiple sources and loads while managing protection, coordination, grounding, and isolation schemes.
- Show proven ability to integrate grid-tied inverters, DC/DC conversion stages, and battery energy storage systems into a coherent power network.
- Have background in motor drive or generator inverter systems, such as motor generator units, traction drives, or other high power inverter applications.
- Possess practical experience conducting EMI and EMC testing at the product level to validate electromagnetic compatibility early.
- Exhibit a track record of specifying, evaluating, and managing power electronics suppliers, balancing technical insight with procurement responsibility.
- Provide evidence of working effectively in regulated or safety-conscious environments where documentation and verification are mandatory.
- Display strong judgment in making technical tradeoffs that impact reliability, cost, and schedule in complex power systems.
