Staff Software Engineer, Product
Job description
About the role
You will architect and deliver the core infrastructure that powers Ambience's AI platform in production, taking full ownership of the systems that directly support clinicians at major health networks. In this role, you will act as a technical leader on the AI Platform team, guiding design decisions that balance innovation with reliability and scalability in high-stakes healthcare environments. You will partner closely with product and clinical stakeholders to translate complex requirements into robust, real-time documentation and workflow solutions that improve clinician experiences. You will ensure that the platform can handle extreme operational demands while maintaining strict standards for performance, security, and correctness. This is a hands-on leadership position where you will write, review, and oversee critical code that runs at scale. You will be exposed to cutting-edge AI technologies as part of an OpenAI portfolio company, working alongside some of the most advanced minds in the field. Your work will directly impact how healthcare providers document care, reduce administrative burden, and focus on what matters most: patient outcomes.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and architect major product features that leverage the latest advancements in AI to deliver magical, reliable, and intuitive user experiences for clinicians.
- Anticipate system bottlenecks and proactively re-architect key components of the AI stack before they impact customers or violate production SLAs.
- Lead product initiatives that carry high strategic value, accelerating iteration speed while actively preventing the accumulation of technical debt across the platform.
- Hold the codebase to a high standard by implementing and championing engineering processes that encourage the consistent delivery of high-quality, well-tested code.
- Own the full lifecycle of complex technical initiatives, from initial system design and prototyping through to deployment, monitoring, and iterative improvement in production.
- Build and maintain the core infrastructure that ensures AI workflows remain performant, scalable, and resilient across ambulatory, emergency, and inpatient healthcare settings.
- Collaborate closely with clinical and product partners to deeply understand workflows, translating ambiguous problems into well-defined technical solutions that improve real-world outcomes.
- Mentor engineers and influence technical direction, driving execution speed, quality, and successful outcomes as a hands-on technical leader.
- Work within a distributed stack that spans cloud providers, containers, queuing systems, and databases, adapting quickly to deliver projects with high reliability.
- Champion observability, monitoring, and reliability practices to ensure the platform meets the stringent needs of healthcare environments.
- Contribute to a culture of extreme ownership, where problems are solved collaboratively and every team member feels responsible for platform success.
- Explore and prototype new AI capabilities, integrating them safely and effectively into existing clinical workflows without disrupting critical operations.
- Ensure all delivered features comply with healthcare data standards and security expectations, maintaining trust with health system partners.
- Continuously evaluate tools, frameworks, and architectures, adopting innovations that meaningfully improve platform performance and user experience.
Requirements
- You hold a Bachelor's degree and possess 7+ years of professional experience, or equivalent practical experience.
- You have 7+ years of experience tackling zero-to-one engineering challenges, building and scaling systems to meet production SLAs, and navigating complex architectural trade-offs in distributed environments.
- You are proficient with modern infrastructure stacks, including major cloud providers such as AWS and GCP, container technologies like Docker, queuing systems such as Kafka, and databases like Postgres.
- You are flexible across the stack, capable of delivering projects end-to-end while moving quickly between infrastructure, application, and data layers.
- You demonstrate the ability to mentor other engineers while remaining hands-on, balancing quality, execution speed, and successful outcomes.
- You have a proven track record of owning end-to-end execution, transforming concepts into impactful results with a focus on breakthrough product experiences.
- You thrive in environments filled with complexity and ambiguity, prioritizing collaboration and seeking the best ideas regardless of their origin.
- You value kindness, encouragement, and being a supportive teammate, actively fostering a mission-aligned and ambitious team culture.
