About the role
Abnormal AI is seeking a Software Engineer to join the Message Mailflow team where you will own the design and execution of high-volume email processing systems that power the core Inbound Email Security product. This role focuses on creating and maintaining the infrastructure responsible for billions of emails daily, handling critical functions such as mailbox monitoring, notifications, and automated protective actions. You will be responsible for developing and launching software projects, guiding initiatives from initial concept through design, implementation, and ongoing operation. The position requires enhancing the stability, performance, and scalability of backend services that process massive volumes of email traffic efficiently. You will collaborate closely with other engineering teams, including Detection and Products, to ensure services consistently meet organizational objectives and security standards. Participation in on-call duties is part of the role to guarantee the reliability and availability of essential mailflow systems. You will identify and implement improvements to system efficiency, reduce operational burdens, and boost overall reliability for the engineering organization. What you'll do

- Collaborate cross-functionally to translate product requirements into robust technical solutions for mailflow challenges.
- Optimize backend services to handle high throughput and low latency for critical email processing paths.
- Ensure software implementations align with security standards and operational requirements for inbound email protection.
- Mentor and share knowledge with peers to strengthen the overall capabilities of the Message Mailflow team.
- Drive ownership of service reliability, performance metrics, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Applied Sciences, Information Systems, or a related engineering field.
- A minimum of 3 years of professional experience in backend software development and distributed systems, including designing and building applications.
- Proficiency with Go and/or Python.
- Experience working effectively in distributed teams, with strong asynchronous and written communication skills.
- Proven ability to build and manage features and components from the ground up, balancing new development with operational responsibilities.
- Willingness to adhere to established guidelines, coding practices, and conventions.
- A proactive, growth-oriented mindset with a desire to increase impact and responsibility.
- Eligibility to access technology subject to U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and ability to obtain government authorization as required.
Nice to have
- Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Django, Spark, or Prometheus.
- Familiarity with AWS services and deployment strategies.
- Knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker.

Compensation: Base salary range of $149,200 - $214,500 USD. Actual pay will be determined by factors such as skills, experience, qualifications, and location.
- This role may be eligible for bonus compensation, equity, and a comprehensive benefits package.
- Employment in this position is contingent on eligibility to access technology subject to U.S. Export Administration Regulations (EAR) and may require government authorization.
