Software Engineer II
Job description
About the role
Abnormal AI is redefining cybersecurity with an AI-native platform that protects modern enterprises from advanced email attacks, account compromise, and human-targeted threats. Our products help security teams detect sophisticated attacks, investigate risk quickly, and automate response at enterprise scale. We are building a team of strong engineers who are excited to use modern AI development tools to build faster, make better decisions, and ship high-quality software with more leverage. You will own the backend systems that power the most critical email security capabilities for our enterprise customers. This role focuses on consolidating incumbent email gateway customers by delivering feature parity with high reliability and performance. You will work on systems that process real-time email traffic and enable security operations at scale. The position emphasizes end-to-end ownership of services in a fast-moving product environment. You will partner closely with product and cross-functional teams to unblock customers and accelerate adoption of Abnormal.
Key facts
What you'll do
Build and maintain backend services that power the CEP product surface across email security workflows.
Design and evolve event-driven pipelines using Kafka consumers and Airflow DAGs to process email traffic reliably at enterprise scale.
Work across a multi-tenant, multi-cloud deployment footprint that includes M365 and Google Workspace customers as well as FedRAMP environments.
Leverage AI-augmented development tools to explore solutions, refine outputs, and deliver reliable production outcomes with increased efficiency.
Collaborate with product and cross-functional partners to iterate quickly on features that move customers from legacy SEGs to Abnormal.
Contribute to service reliability, observability, and operational quality as the team scales its product surface and customer footprint.
Own the implementation of critical email security features that directly impact customer migration decisions and product adoption.
Ensure backend components meet strict security, compliance, and performance standards for enterprise deployments.
Participate in on-call rotations and incident response to support production services and improve resilience.
Drive technical design discussions and code reviews that uphold a high engineering bar across the team.
Translate product requirements into robust backend implementations that integrate with existing security platforms.
Optimize data processing pipelines for throughput, latency, and cost efficiency in large-scale email environments.
Work with cross-functional stakeholders to prioritize work that unblocks customers and accelerates migration from legacy email gateways.
Maintain and extend APIs and integrations that enable seamless operation across multi-cloud and hybrid deployments.
Requirements
Must have 3+ years of professional experience in software development across backend systems.
Possess backend development experience with Python or Golang in production-grade applications.
Demonstrate knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, GCP, or Azure and containerization technologies including Docker and Kubernetes.
Show strong fundamentals in computer science, data structures, and algorithms with an emphasis on performance optimization.
Have experience designing and operating scalable, enterprise-grade applications that meet strict reliability requirements.
Understand multi-tenant architecture patterns and considerations for SaaS platforms serving large organizations.
Be comfortable working in fast-paced environments where requirements evolve based on customer needs and security threats.
Commit to writing clean, testable code and participating actively in team code reviews and technical discussions.
Nice to have
Experience with AI development tools such as Cursor, GitHub Copilot, or Claude to accelerate development and code quality.
Hands-on experience with event-driven systems including Kafka, SQS, or similar message queue and stream processing patterns.
Familiarity with email delivery pipelines and email authentication standards such as DMARC, DKIM, and SPF.
Exposure to multi-tenant SaaS architectures and enterprise integrations with platforms like M365 and Google Workspace APIs.
Prior experience improving service reliability, observability, and operational tooling in production systems.
Previous work in cybersecurity, email security, or compliance-adjacent domains where threat landscapes shape product decisions.
