Backend Engineer - Account Insights

You will transform transaction data into clear, actionable insights, enabling users to make informed decisions about their money. Your work will directly contribute to customers managing their finances more effectively with Wise.

Key facts

What you'll do

• Develop the backend for customer-facing features, including spending summaries, travel insights, and financial controls like budgets and recurring payment tracking.
• Work with a high-volume streaming and storage architecture to accurately aggregate activity data and deliver it via low-latency APIs.
• Improve the precision of transaction categorization to build customer trust in the financial data they see.
• Take full ownership of components and workflows, from initial development through deployment, production operation, and participation in the on-call rotation.
• Produce high-quality tests, clear documentation, and conduct code reviews to maintain high standards within the team.

Requirements

• Ability to independently complete medium-sized backend projects through their entire lifecycle, seeking team support for complex challenges.
• Strong understanding of backend principles and proficiency in your primary programming language, specifically Java/Spring Boot.
• Good grasp of distributed systems concepts, including asynchronous communication and event streaming.
• Writes well-tested, high-quality code and actively works to improve existing codebases.
• Provides and accepts feedback openly, contributing to a collaborative and inclusive team environment.

Nice to have

• Experience with Kafka, stream processing, or high-throughput, low-latency services.
