This role involves safeguarding client interests within the wealth management sector. You will ensure that financial advice provided aligns with client needs and regulatory standards. Your work will support the integrity of client relationships and uphold compliance with Canadian securities laws.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Supervise and review activities of Portfolio Managers, Associate Portfolio Managers, and sales teams to ensure recommendations meet client suitability and product knowledge requirements.
- Examine financial plans for completeness, regulatory adherence, and consistency with client goals, verifying accurate information and disclosure.
- Manage the firm's sales conduct review program, including scheduled and risk-based checks of client files, identifying issues, and coordinating resolutions.
- Conduct quality control on client onboarding and update processes to confirm Know Your Client (KYC) information is accurate and documented.
- Monitor for conflicts of interest arising from various activities, ensuring proper disclosure and management in collaboration with legal teams.
- Seek opportunities to improve conduct review processes, documentation, and use technology to enhance supervision efficiency.
Requirements
- 3-5 years of experience in compliance or supervision within a CIRO-regulated investment dealer or portfolio management firm, with direct experience overseeing Portfolio Managers.
- Strong understanding of NI 31-103, CIRO IDPC Rules, and Canada's Client-Focused Reforms, particularly regarding KYC, KYP, suitability, and conflicts of interest.
- Familiarity with financial planning concepts such as retirement, tax-efficient investing, and estate planning, and their connection to regulatory suitability.
- Completion of the CIRO Canadian Investment Regulatory Exam and Supervisor Examination, or prior completion of the Canadian Securities Course, Conduct and Practices Handbook (CPH), and Investment Dealers Supervisors Course (IDSC, with eligibility for supervisor registration).
- Ability to analyze client files, trade records, or financial plans to quickly identify inconsistencies and escalate issues.
- Capacity to address difficult findings and uphold regulatory standards while maintaining professional relationships with business stakeholders.
- Eagerness to use technology and AI to automate tasks like flagging exceptions, tracking KYC cycles, and generating reports.
Nice to have
- CFP, PFP, or equivalent designation.
- Completion of, or interest in completing, the Chartered Investment Manager Designation (CIM®).
