Senior Analyst, Tax
About the role
As Wealthsimple's tax obligations grow with our expansion, you will be instrumental in managing our income and sales tax filings. This position reports to the Director, Tax and involves collaborating with other Tax Managers to ensure accuracy and efficiency in our tax processes. You will apply your technical tax knowledge and meticulous approach to documentation while seeking opportunities for automation and modernization.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Manage month-end and quarter-end tax accounting procedures, including provision calculations, account reconciliations, and supporting documentation.
- Prepare and reconcile monthly, quarterly, and annual sales tax returns (GST/HST/QST and other indirect taxes) for all Wealthsimple legal entities.
- Prepare monthly income tax returns and associated account reconciliations.
- Maintain comprehensive, audit-ready documentation and working papers for all tax filings and reconciliations.
- Identify and resolve discrepancies, reconcile outstanding items, and highlight any process deficiencies to the Tax Team.
- Collaborate with Finance, Accounting, and other departments to ensure timely and accurate tax compliance data.
- Participate in special projects such as process enhancements, automation initiatives, technical research, tax modeling, and audit support.
Requirements
- 3-5+ years of experience in Canadian income tax and/or sales tax compliance, preferably in financial services, fintech, or public accounting.
- Proficient in preparing Canadian corporate income tax returns (T2).
- Solid understanding of tax accounting principles (provisions) under IFRS.
- Advanced Excel skills for handling large datasets and complex reconciliations efficiently.
- Experience using technology and AI tools to improve accuracy, documentation, and efficiency in compliance tasks.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple deadlines across different tax cycles.
- Clear written and verbal communication abilities, capable of explaining complex tax matters to non-tax professionals.
Nice to have
- CPA designation (or in progress) or a comparable professional qualification.
- Experience in a rapidly growing fintech or financial services company.
- Familiarity with sales tax, SR&ED, transfer pricing, or cross-border tax issues.
- Experience with tax technology platforms or process automation tools.
