Staff Software Engineer

About the role

Waymo is seeking an experienced engineer to join the Simulator Team to advance our autonomous driving technology. You will build the infrastructure and data platforms necessary to train and test the Waymo Driver using high-fidelity simulations.

What you'll do

• Architect and maintain scalable software systems using C++ and Python for our data management platform.
• Create and refine pipelines to process, label, and organize massive multi-modal sensor datasets.
• Develop storage, versioning, and lifecycle management solutions for large-scale data.
• Enhance the reliability and performance of our existing data infrastructure.
• Partner with researchers and engineers to design data APIs and interfaces.
• Shape the long-term technical architecture of our simulation data ecosystem.

Requirements

• BS or MS degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• At least 7 years of professional software development experience, specifically in backend or infrastructure roles.
• Proficiency in C++ and Python.
• Proven experience with large-scale data processing tools such as Spark, Beam, or Flume.
• Practical experience with data warehousing, databases, and production-level monitoring.
• Capacity to address complex, open-ended system design problems.

Nice to have

• Background in constructing ML feature stores, data lakes, or dedicated data platforms.
• Knowledge of data management standards tailored for machine learning workflows.
• Experience handling large-scale multi-modal data.
• History of creating user-facing interfaces and APIs.

Practical notes

This is a hybrid role reporting to a Sr Staff TLM. Compensation includes a discretionary annual bonus, equity participation, and a comprehensive benefits package. Final salary offers are determined by individual experience, education, and specific work location.
