About the role
You will define and drive the technical vision and architectural strategy for autonomous, multi-agent systems within the DUE Experience team, concentrating on transformative improvements in event triage. You will lead the exploration and application of state-of-the-art agentic technologies to automate complex triage workflows, shifting paradigms from static LLM generation to dynamic reasoning, planning, and execution. You will architect, design, and guide the implementation of scalable, robust agentic frameworks capable of dynamic tool use, self-reflection, and multi-step orchestration. You will collaborate across teams to identify opportunities where agentic workflows and specialized AI agents can autonomously navigate and impact the broader Waymo Driver evaluation lifecycle. You will mentor and provide technical guidance to engineers within DUE Experience and partner teams, fostering innovation and engineering excellence in agentic design patterns. You will identify and advocate for the broad problem(s) worth solving, turning big-picture concepts into actionable projects and roadmaps for human-on-the-loop autonomous systems. You will own the end-to-end delivery of high-impact technical initiatives that directly enhance the reliability and insightfulness of the Waymo Driver's evaluation process.

What you'll do
Architect and own the strategic technical roadmap for agentic evaluation workflows within the DUE Experience team, ensuring alignment with Waymo's safety and product objectives.
Lead the design and implementation of scalable agentic frameworks that orchestrate dynamic tool use, self-reflection, and multi-step reasoning to automate complex triage processes.
Explore, prototype, and integrate state-of-the-art agentic technologies and reasoning engines to augment the capabilities of the Waymo Driver evaluation lifecycle.
Define and evolve the architecture for real-world data ingestion, context and scene analysis, and the generation of rare driving events through agentic workflows.
Build and maintain large-scale data infrastructure and robust components such as agents and simulators to support high-fidelity evaluation and testing.
Collaborate deeply with cross-functional teams to uncover opportunities where specialized AI agents can influence and improve the efficiency and accuracy of the Driver evaluation pipeline.
Mentor engineers and technical leads across DUE Experience and partner organizations, promoting best practices in agentic design patterns and autonomous system implementation.
Translate ambiguous, high-level concepts into concrete projects and roadmaps, balancing innovation with practical constraints to deliver measurable impact on the Driver's performance evaluation.
Champion rigorous experimentation and analysis to validate agentic workflows, ensuring they deliver reliable, scalable, and actionable insights for improving autonomous driving safety.
Act as a technical thought partner for stakeholders across Waymo, articulating complex trade-offs and guiding decisions on architecture, tool selection, and evaluation methodologies.
Requirements
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Extensive experience (typically 10+ years) in software engineering, with a significant focus on architecting and building large-scale, complex systems.
Deep expertise in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, with heavy, hands-on experience building autonomous agents, multi-agent orchestration systems, and integrating LLMs with external tools/APIs.
Proven ability to define technical strategy, influence senior leadership, and drive execution across multiple teams in ambiguous and rapidly evolving domains.
A strong track record of technical leadership, including designing and implementing novel agent-based solutions that improve system outcomes.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to diverse audiences and stakeholders.
Proficiency in modern software engineering practices, including version control, code review, testing, and deployment in a fast-paced, production-grade environment.
Comfort operating in a high-ambiguity, fast-paced environment where priorities evolve based on technical discovery and business needs.
Nice to have
PhD in Computer Science or a related field, with a specialization in AI/ML or a related area.
Experience with agentic frameworks, knowledge graphs, and reasoning engines.
Familiarity with autonomous vehicle simulation, testing, or evaluation domains.
Proficiency in C++ and experience with building production-grade services.
Experience working with large-scale data processing and distributed systems.
Familiarity with Google's or Waymo's internal AI/ML platforms and infrastructure.
Practical notes
This is a full-time position based in the United States.
Work locations include Mountain View, California; Seattle, Washington; New York City, New York; and Los Angeles, California.
Relocation may be available for qualified candidates.
