This position will manage all aspects of multi-state payroll processing, employer tax responsibilities, and business licensing for our remote workforce. You will be a key individual contributor within the People Operations team, collaborating with Finance, Legal, and operational departments. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical skills, a talent for process development, and a reliable operational approach in a growing company.

What you'll do
Process biweekly payroll accurately and on time for all employees across various states, handling off-cycle payments and adjustments in line with state regulations.
Oversee federal, state, and local employer payroll tax filings and payments, managing new tax registrations as the company expands.
Administer business licenses, operating permits, and fictitious business name filings, ensuring timely renewals and compliance across all operating locations.
Serve as the primary user for payroll and tax functions within Rippling, identifying and implementing improvements to enhance accuracy and efficiency.
Maintain comprehensive payroll and licensing records, and provide support for internal and external audits.
Requirements
Possess at least 5 years of experience in multi-state payroll processing, with specific knowledge of California payroll requirements.
Demonstrate a solid understanding of federal and state employer payroll tax obligations and filing procedures.
Have experience with business license administration or a strong willingness to take ownership of this function.
Be proficient with a modern HRIS or payroll system, with a preference for Rippling experience.
Exhibit a high level of attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple deadlines effectively.
Experience working in a multi-state healthcare, clinical, or a Series B/C+ startup environment is preferred.
Nice to have
Familiarity with California payroll specifics such as final pay timing, meal and rest break premiums, and PTO payout rules.
Experience with employer tax registration processes for entering new state markets.
Hold a FPC or CPP certification, or be actively working towards one.
