Job description
Senior Software Engineer II at Virta Health
About the role
This position offers a combination of meaningful impact, technical challenges, and modern development tools. You will be instrumental in building and enhancing Virta's data engagement platform, transforming data into eligibility decisions and audience segments for outreach.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Define and maintain the data contracts and processing logic that govern identity, deployment context, eligibility, audience attributes, deduplication, and data persistence throughout its lifecycle.
- Develop comprehensive observability and reconciliation systems to track how source data transforms into downstream results, including data timeliness, expected filtering, rejected records, deduplication, safe replay, and historical state correction.
- Lead technical exploration and execution for critical initiatives within Member Marketing and Coverage Eligibility, working collaboratively with Product, data teams, and external partners.
- Collaborate with Product and Growth teams to translate evolving audience and workflow needs into reusable platform components, ensuring clear separation between business policies and technical implementation.
- Design systems for accuracy and auditability within regulated workflows, encompassing data provenance, consent management, rollback capabilities, replay mechanisms, and safeguards against improper data usage.
- Update legacy file-based processes to adopt well-defined contracts, event-driven integrations, and robust observability, enhancing resilience and security.
- Take full ownership of systems from architecture to operation, driving improvements in reliability, partner experience, and long-term maintainability.
- Employ an experimental approach (Build-Measure-Learn) to validate assumptions and focus on outcomes, utilizing AI-assisted tools to boost speed and quality without compromising accuracy.
Requirements
- Proficient backend engineering experience, with a history of building and maintaining scalable, reliable production systems, particularly those involving APIs, event-driven architectures, or data integrations.
- Experience designing data-centric systems where accuracy relies on explicit schemas, identity resolution, incremental processing, idempotency, data lineage, reconciliation, and recovery from partial failures.
- A proactive, self-directed approach to problem-solving, identifying issues, proposing solutions, and driving them to completion.
- High degree of autonomy and initiative, capable of navigating ambiguity, setting direction, and executing independently while keeping stakeholders informed.
- Demonstrated technical leadership, including establishing architectural and engineering standards, mentoring other engineers, and translating ambiguous business needs into a structured technical plan.
- Experience with business-to-business or partner-facing data systems, such as file transfers, real-time data exchange, or partner APIs.
- Sound judgment regarding the application of AI-assisted tools to enhance engineering speed, data quality investigations, documentation, and operations, while recognizing when deterministic controls are necessary for correctness and safety.
- Strong collaboration and communication abilities, especially in cross-functional settings with Product, data teams, and external partners.
- Typically 10+ years of software engineering experience, with a proven ability to perform at a senior level.
Nice to have
- Experience with healthcare data domains like eligibility, claims, EHR, or member marketing, particularly in regulated or partner-integrated environments.
- Familiarity with customer data platforms, marketing automation, or audience activation tools such as Braze, Segment, Salesforce Marketing Cloud, or similar.
- Previous work modernizing legacy data workflows, including migrations from SFTP/file-based systems to API- or event-driven architectures.
- Knowledge of data quality frameworks, lineage tracking, or automated anomaly detection in data pipelines.
- Proven use of AI/LLM tools in engineering tasks, such as test generation, documentation, data mapping, or observability.
- Past roles involving influencing without direct authority or driving change across teams or systems not directly managed.
