Senior Electrical Engineer
Job description
About the role
You will own the end-to-end electrical engineering lifecycle for advanced nuclear fuel manufacturing facilities, setting the technical vision and execution strategy for critical power systems. You will act as the principal authority for electrical design, leading complex studies and decisions that directly impact safety, reliability, and buildability. This role requires you to translate high-level facility requirements into detailed electrical infrastructure that supports manufacturing, hydrogen production, and industrial processes. You will own relationships with clients, regulators, and vendors, ensuring alignment with the company's rigorous safety culture and fast deployment goals. You will mentor the next generation of engineers and foster a collaborative environment where precision and innovation coexist. Your work will directly enable the operation of the first pilot plant in Orangeville, Utah, shaping how advanced nuclear systems are powered and scaled. You will be accountable for delivering robust, factory-ready electrical solutions that meet the demanding standards of the nuclear industry.
Key facts
What you'll do
Lead the development and maintenance of comprehensive electrical load lists and perform detailed power system studies including load flow, short circuit analysis per ANSI and IEC standards, voltage drop, motor starting, and harmonic distortion using industry tools such as SKM Power Tools and ETAP.
Prepare in-depth arc flash hazard analyses to IEEE 1584 and develop substation grounding studies according to IEEE 80, while accurately sizing transformers, cables, switchgear busbars, capacitor banks, and uninterruptible power supply and battery systems.
Develop complete single line diagrams for medium voltage and low voltage distribution systems, covering the path from utility interface through switchgear to motor control centers and final distribution boards, and prepare detailed equipment arrangement, layout, cable schedule, tray routing, and underground duct bank drawings.
Specify medium voltage switchgear, low voltage switchboards, motor control centers, distribution panelboards, power transformers, bus ducts, variable frequency drives, uninterruptible power systems, and standby generator packages, and prepare electrical area classification drawings with selection of equipment suitable for hazardous areas per NEC, CEC, and IEC 60079 standards.
Prepare protection relay setting studies and time-current coordination plots for medium voltage systems, specify protection relays and metering equipment, and develop relay panel arrangement diagrams, DC control schematics, and motor control wiring diagrams.
Author detailed technical specifications and data sheets for electrical equipment, evaluate competitive vendor bids against technical and cost criteria, conduct thorough vendor drawing reviews, assess type test reports and quality plans, and participate in factory acceptance testing where appropriate.
Lead vendor pre-qualification and the technical evaluation of bids, provide recommendation for award, manage documentation review cycles for electrical packages, and conduct or oversee factory audits for safety-critical and nuclear-classified equipment to ensure compliance and quality.
Prepare installation specifications for electrical systems, support pre-commissioning activities such as insulation resistance testing, continuity checks, relay secondary testing, and equipment energization, and provide prompt response to technical queries during construction and commissioning phases.
Coordinate design interfaces with instrumentation and control engineers on motor and drive control schemes, and work closely with civil and structural disciplines on substation layout, cable routing, and penetration requirements to ensure constructability and regulatory compliance.
Mentor junior electrical engineers, represent the electrical discipline at design reviews, HAZOP studies, authority having jurisdiction meetings, and regulatory interactions, and direct external contractors and consultants on electrical scope, work assignments, technical reviews, and deliverable tracking.
Requirements
Hold a Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution, with a strong focus on power systems, protection, and control.
Demonstrate proven experience in nuclear, industrial, or mission-critical energy projects where strict safety, quality, and regulatory standards are essential.
Possess deep expertise in medium and low voltage power system analysis, including load flow, short circuit, protection coordination, and arc flash studies using tools such as SKM Power Tools and ETAP.
Show competence in preparing single line diagrams, detailed equipment layouts, cable schedules, and underground duct bank designs for complex manufacturing environments.
Have hands-on experience specifying medium voltage switchgear, low voltage switchboards, motor control centers, transformers, UPS and generator systems, and familiarity with variable frequency drives.
Understand electrical area classification and equipment selection for hazardous locations in accordance with NEC, CEC, and IEC 60079 standards relevant to nuclear facilities.
Be proficient in preparing technical specifications, data sheets, and vendor evaluation documents, with the ability to review vendor drawings, test reports, and quality plans.
Exhibit strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills, with the ability to manage multiple design tasks and deliver high-quality work under tight timelines.
Nice to have
Experience with advanced nuclear fuel manufacturing or other advanced reactor fuel cycle facilities.
Familiarity with regulatory processes for the nuclear industry and interaction with authorities having jurisdiction.
