Sr Software Engineer

About the role

Upstart is looking for a senior engineer to build and maintain the systems that drive our financial operations and lending platform. You will focus on creating scalable, event-driven architectures that automate critical accounting and risk management workflows.

What you'll do

• Architect and maintain distributed, event-driven systems for capital risk and accounting automation.
• Develop data processing solutions to transform high-volume financial events into reliable outcomes.
• Coordinate with Product, Finance, Data Analytics, and Engineering departments to solve complex technical challenges.
• Enhance the scalability and maintainability of financial systems while managing technical debt.
• Lead multi-quarter engineering projects from the initial architecture phase through production deployment.
• Utilize AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity while ensuring high standards for security and code quality.

Requirements

• Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 4+ years of professional software engineering experience in production environments.
• Experience building and operating distributed, event-driven applications on cloud platforms like AWS.
• Background in developing scalable backend services using modern programming languages.
• Proven ability to design, test, and deploy reliable production systems following industry best practices.

Nice to have

• Familiarity with accounting processes, financial systems, or capital risk management.
• Experience with high-throughput data processing or event streaming.
• Ability to balance long-term operational efficiency with system scalability.
• Experience working across cross-functional teams to deliver technical initiatives.
• Interest in applying generative AI tools to accelerate development workflows.

Practical notes

• Salary range (US): $166,900 to $230,900 USD.
• Salary range (Canada): $153,000 to $190,000 USD.
• Compensation includes base pay, target bonuses, and annual equity grants.
