About the role

You will design, build, and maintain internal software platforms that drive core banking operations and compliance workflows at Upstart Bank. This role owns the end to end lifecycle of critical internal applications used by risk, compliance, legal, and operations teams. You will partner with cross functional stakeholders to translate complex business requirements into scalable, secure, and intuitive technical solutions. You will build and evolve APIs, data integrations, and background processing systems that connect our internal platforms with external financial networks. You will write technical designs and architectural documentation that establish durable engineering patterns and reduce long term maintenance burden. What you'll do

Design, build, and maintain internal software platforms that support risk, compliance, legal, and operational workflows across Upstart Bank.

Partner with cross-functional stakeholders to translate business requirements into scalable technical solutions and intuitive user experiences.

Develop and maintain APIs, integrations, and data workflows that connect internal systems with third-party platforms.

Design relational data models, authorization frameworks, audit capabilities, and background processing systems that support secure and reliable operations.

Write technical designs, architectural documentation, and implementation plans that establish durable engineering patterns and reduce future maintenance costs.

Contribute to technical decisions regarding system architecture, build-versus-buy evaluations, and long-term platform scalability.

Implement observability, monitoring, and alerting strategies to ensure high availability and performance of production banking systems.

Collaborate with security and compliance teams to ensure implementations meet regulatory standards and internal governance requirements.

Refactor legacy components into modular, testable services that improve maintainability and developer experience.

Mentor junior engineers by providing code review feedback, technical guidance, and best practices for building robust systems.

Participate in on call rotations to support production incidents and ensure timely resolution of operational issues.

Engage in continuous learning and share emerging technologies and engineering practices with the broader team.

Contribute to product delivery planning and sprint execution in an agile environment.

Evaluate third party tools and services to determine fit for bank infrastructure and compliance needs.

Champion engineering excellence through testing, automation, and reliable deployment pipelines.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience) and 4+ years of software engineering experience.

Experience designing, building, and operating production web applications used by internal or external customers.

Experience designing relational database schemas and managing complex data models using PostgreSQL or a similar relational database.

Experience building and maintaining RESTful APIs, integrations, webhooks, or distributed system interfaces.

Experience implementing application security fundamentals, including authentication, role-based access control, audit logging, and schema migrations.

Ability to work effectively in a fully digital first environment with occasional in person collaboration at team onsites or office locations.

Willingness to relocate to one of Upstart's office locations if required and comply with employment eligibility requirements to work in the United States.

Nice to have

Knowledge of TypeScript, Node.js, Next.js, Prisma, or similar modern web application frameworks.

Experience building and operating services in cloud environments, including containerization and infrastructure as code practices.

Understanding of financial services domain and regulatory constraints relevant to banking applications.

Practical notes

This is a full time position located in the United States. Remote work is available, with expectations for occasional in person collaboration. Travel is not required for this role. Visas may be sponsored for qualified candidates.
