Senior Manager, Privacy Engineering at Upstart.
About the role
You will lead the team responsible for building privacy infrastructure and technical controls across our AI lending marketplace. This role involves setting the technical roadmap, mentoring engineers, and integrating privacy-by-design into our data systems.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Direct the strategy and execution of privacy infrastructure, data governance, and privacy-by-design initiatives.
- Recruit, coach, and manage a team of privacy engineers while defining technical standards and priorities.
- Oversee the delivery of privacy controls including encryption, key management, audit logging, data discovery, classification, and retention.
- Collaborate with Legal, Security, Product, Data, and Machine Learning departments to convert regulatory requirements into technical solutions.
- Conduct threat modeling, privacy reviews, and risk assessments for new platform capabilities and data flows.
- Report on metrics, project progress, and technical dependencies to cross-functional stakeholders.
Requirements
- Bachelor degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or equivalent experience.
- 8+ years of engineering experience, including at least 3 years in direct people management.
- Experience leading teams focused on production software, platform, security, or data systems.
- Background in designing or operating privacy, security, or data governance capabilities in production environments.
- Proven ability to translate compliance or regulatory requirements into functional technical controls.
- Experience partnering with cross-functional teams like Legal, Compliance, Product, or Machine Learning.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with privacy-by-design, data minimization, and data subject rights.
- Knowledge of frameworks and regulations such as GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, GLBA, or FCRA.
- Experience with automated policy enforcement, data lineage, or data inventories.
- Background in building governance controls for AI, machine learning, or financial services.
- Ability to explain technical privacy tradeoffs to diverse audiences including legal and business stakeholders.

Practical notes
- This is a digital-first role with the expectation of traveling for team onsites, typically once or twice per quarter for 2-4 days.
- Compensation includes base pay, annual equity grants, and target bonuses.
