What you'll do
- Assess and analyze mortgage applications, including credit reports, income documentation, and property appraisals to determine eligibility and risk levels.
- Utilize Upstart's proprietary technology and data-driven insights to make informed underwriting decisions that align with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Collaborate closely with loan officers, real estate agents, and other stakeholders to clarify information and resolve any discrepancies in applications.
- Provide clear and concise communication regarding underwriting decisions to both internal teams and external clients, ensuring transparency throughout the process.
- Maintain a thorough understanding of current lending regulations, guidelines, and industry trends to ensure compliance and mitigate risk.
- Conduct post-closing audits to verify that all underwriting conditions have been met and that loans are compliant with company standards.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements and contribute to the development of best practices within the underwriting team.
- Participate in training and mentoring of junior underwriters, sharing knowledge and expertise to enhance team performance.
- Monitor and manage a pipeline of loans, ensuring timely processing and adherence to service level agreements.
- Stay updated on changes in credit policies and underwriting standards, adapting practices as necessary to align with new regulations.
- Utilize advanced analytical tools and software to enhance decision-making processes and improve overall efficiency in underwriting.
- Prepare detailed reports on underwriting performance metrics and trends to assist management in strategic planning and decision-making.
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in mortgage underwriting, with a strong understanding of conventional and government loan programs.
- Proven ability to analyze financial documents, credit reports, and property appraisals with a keen eye for detail.
- Familiarity with automated underwriting systems and technology-driven lending solutions.
- Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, to effectively convey complex information to diverse audiences.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a focus on data-driven decision-making.
- Ability to work independently in a remote environment while managing multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Knowledge of current lending regulations, compliance standards, and risk assessment practices.
- Proficiency in using Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel, for data analysis and reporting.
- A bachelor's degree in finance, business, or a related field is preferred but not mandatory.
Nice to have
- Experience with non-QM (Qualified Mortgage) products or alternative lending solutions.
- Certification from a recognized underwriting organization (e.g., AUS, CMB).
- Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software and loan origination systems.
- Previous experience in a fast-paced fintech environment, particularly in a remote setting.
- Bilingual skills are a plus, enhancing communication with a diverse client base.
