About the role
Uber is developing a new logistics platform designed to efficiently manage the movement of packages throughout a regional carrier network. This includes everything from initial pickups to final deliveries, covering middle-mile transport, sorting operations, and last-mile logistics.
Uber Direct is rapidly expanding within the B2C delivery market, allowing merchants to manage deliveries through our Dashboard or by integrating with our public API. We are enhancing these features to create a comprehensive package logistics network.
This position offers a unique chance to contribute to a foundational platform at an early stage. You will be responsible for designing and managing core systems that monitor package custody as it transitions through the network, ensuring the reliability of Uber's logistics operations for years to come.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Create and develop core services that manage and coordinate package movements across the network, from pickup through sorting and delivery.
- Develop scalable and high-quality features utilized by merchants, drivers, warehouse staff, and customers.
- Construct domain models from foundational principles and design event-driven systems and data architectures that will support logistics for the foreseeable future.
- Produce clean, maintainable, scalable, and well-documented code using Uber's platform technologies (Go, distributed databases, workflow orchestration, streaming/event buses, RPC).
- Influence architecture and system design decisions based on data-driven insights.
- Establish reliable monitoring and alerting for the systems you oversee, taking full responsibility for their performance, reliability, and operational health.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams (Product, Design, Data, Operations) to tackle complex challenges and deliver comprehensive solutions.
- Offer technical guidance and mentorship to junior engineers on the team.
Requirements
- Over 8 years of experience in backend software engineering.
- Strong skills in Golang, Java, or a comparable programming language.
- Proven experience in designing and managing distributed systems at scale.
- A history of delivering high-quality products utilized by actual customers.
- Commitment to taking full ownership of your products, including their operation and reliability.
- Experience working collaboratively across various functions and leading cross-team initiatives.
- Background in mentoring and supporting junior engineers.
Nice to have
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related technical discipline.
- Familiarity with event-driven architectures, streaming systems, and microservice design.
- Experience in logistics, supply chain, fulfillment, marketplaces, or similar high-throughput operational systems.
- Comfort in working within greenfield projects and integrating existing systems into new platforms.
- Proven ability to drive alignment among stakeholders in cross-team projects.
- Initiative to identify and implement improvements for efficiency and effectiveness.
- Capability to convert high-level, ambiguous business challenges into specific technical solutions.
Practical notes
For positions based in Seattle, WA, the salary range for this role is between USD $232,000 and USD $258,000 annually.
You will have the opportunity to participate in Uber's bonus program and may receive equity awards and other compensation. All full-time employees can enroll in a 401(k) plan and are eligible for various benefits.
