About the role
toogeza is seeking a Publishing House Manager for The Kyiv Independent, a prominent Ukrainian English-language media outlet. This role involves developing and executing the strategy for a new publishing house, focusing on books, magazines, and other formats. You will lead the initiative from its inception, building processes and partnerships to expand the organization's reach.

What you'll do
- Help define the vision, strategy, and business model for the new publishing house with leadership.
- Oversee the launch and expansion of the publishing initiative, establishing workflows and partnerships.
- Discover and assess publishing prospects like books, magazines, translations, and special editions.
- Work with editorial, commercial, marketing, fundraising, and product teams to create a sustainable publishing program.
- Provide strategic direction for all publishing activities.
- Manage manuscript acquisition, editorial planning, and content selection.
- Build and maintain relationships with authors, agents, publishers, and translators.
- Direct marketing, distribution, and audience growth for publishing products.
- Supervise rights management, including foreign, audio, and digital licensing.
- Handle budgets, financial performance, and profitability goals.
- Recruit and manage external contractors, and eventually an internal publishing team.
- Track industry developments to find opportunities for innovation and expansion.
Requirements
- At least 3 years of increasing experience in book publishing or media, with a desire for growth.
- Demonstrated ability in making editorial decisions and acquiring titles.
- Proven leadership skills, including managing teams across different functions.
- Strong written and verbal communication abilities.
- Comprehensive understanding of the publishing industry, market trends, and distribution.
- Fluent in Ukrainian and advanced English.
