About the role
You will lead the integrated planning and design of mechanical systems for a diverse portfolio of industrial and commercial facilities within a multi-disciplinary team environment. In this capacity, you will own the development of detailed HVAC, plumbing, and related mechanical solutions from initial concept through final construction documentation. You will conduct sophisticated energy modeling and life cycle cost analysis to optimize sustainable building performance and system efficiency. The role requires close collaboration with Architecture, Civil, Structural, and Electrical disciplines to ensure seamless integration of all building systems. You will perform critical equipment selection, sizing, and heat load analysis to meet project specifications and operational requirements. Furthermore, you will prepare comprehensive mechanical plans, detailed specifications, and precise design details that guide construction execution. You will also engage directly with clients during presentations and interviews, representing the engineering team in project discussions. This position includes opportunities to advance into Project Manager roles for mechanical-intensive and large-scale multi-disciplinary projects, driving outcomes for demanding industrial, food and beverage, educational, and commercial sectors.

What you'll do
Perform detailed engineering calculations and system performance analysis for heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems.
Develop comprehensive construction documentation, including plans, specifications, and design details that align with project requirements and regulatory standards.
Conduct energy modeling and life cycle cost assessments to inform sustainable design decisions and long-term operational efficiency.
Lead equipment selection and sizing processes, ensuring mechanical systems are properly tailored to project needs and performance goals.
Execute heat load analysis and system diagnostics to optimize performance and reliability across diverse facility types.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including Architecture, Civil, Structural, and Electrical disciplines, to integrate mechanical solutions into holistic project designs.
Represent the firm in client presentations and interviews, communicating technical concepts and project value to stakeholders.
Interact with local code officials, permitting authorities, and regulatory bodies to secure approvals and ensure compliance.
Participate in project site visits, inspections, and assessments to verify design intent and construction quality.
Support project development activities, including fee estimating, scope definition, and technical proposal preparation.
Serve as a Project Manager on complex mechanical projects, overseeing schedules, resources, and deliverables.
Contribute to the growth of the firm's technical capabilities through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and process improvement.
Leverage industry standards and best practices to maintain high levels of quality, safety, and sustainability in all designs.
Adapt to evolving project demands and emerging technologies in mechanical systems and sustainable design.
Requirements
Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering or a related field from an accredited institution.
Current Professional Engineer (PE) license in good standing is required for the position.
Minimum of 8 years of progressive experience in mechanical engineering design, with a focus on HVAC, plumbing, and commercial or industrial facilities.
Demonstrated expertise in energy modeling, life cycle cost analysis, and sustainable building performance strategies.
Strong knowledge of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems, including load calculations and equipment selection.
Proficiency with engineering design software, including CAD, BIM, and analysis tools used for mechanical system design.
Ability to prepare detailed construction documents, specifications, and design details that meet client and regulatory expectations.
Effective communication skills to interface with clients, code officials, and multidisciplinary team members in person and in writing.
Nice to have
Experience with food and beverage facilities, light and heavy industrial projects, and complex educational or commercial buildings.
Familiarity with project management software and processes for leading mechanical-intensive projects.
Understanding of commissioning practices and post-occupancy evaluation methods.

This role offers a flexible work arrangement with a schedule of 3 days in the office and 2 days working remotely.
The position can be based at one of the following locations: Bloomington, Minnesota; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; or Downers Grove, Illinois.
