Communications Systems Engineer at Telesat.
About the role
Join the Canadian Sales Engineering team to architect, cost, and deploy satellite and terrestrial communication networks. You will manage the full lifecycle of projects using the Telesat geostationary fleet and the Telesat Lightspeed LEO constellation to meet specific client needs.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and price satellite and IP network proposals for clients and present them during technical meetings.
- Collaborate with customers to define implementation plans, validate requirements, and troubleshoot network performance.
- Calculate link budgets to select RF hardware, including antennas, BUCs, HPAs, LNBs, and user terminals.
- Integrate satellite networks into carrier infrastructures and enterprise WANs by configuring Layer 2 and Layer 3 devices.
- Provide third-level support for RF and network systems.
- Set up network equipment, including routers, switches, and firewalls, while applying security, QOS, and routing protocols.
- Draft technical specifications and scopes of work to solicit vendor quotes and assist procurement in price negotiations.
- Travel to customer sites and Telesat facilities to install, test, and validate RF antenna systems.
- Train teleport staff and field representatives on system operations.
Requirements
- Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Computer Science with a focus on Telecommunications.
- Professional experience with GEO satellite systems and familiarity with LEO satellite systems.
- Experience with hub-based systems, SCPC, and VSATs.
- Knowledge of DVB-S2/X, TDM/A, satellite modems, and adaptive coding/modulation.
- Expertise in IP network design, including TCP/IP, MPLS, and Layer-2 Ethernet for enterprise and telco services.
- Ability to work in Canada and secure clearance under the Canadian Controlled Goods Program (CGP).
- Proficiency in English.
- Capability to manage projects, lead contractors, and work in high-pressure environments.
- Competency with Windows and Linux operating systems.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with RF systems and components.
- Certification or experience with MEF standards.
- Experience with SDN and SD-WAN.
- Proficiency in French.
Skills & tools
- Microsoft Office suite.
- Engineering simulation and analysis software.
- Spectrum analyzers, radiation meters, protocol analyzers, and fiber/copper testing tools.
- General hand and power tools.
Practical notes
This role involves a mix of office work and travel to customer or vendor sites. You will be required to work overtime and participate in on-call rotations as needed. Candidates must be legally authorized to work in Canada and meet CGP security clearance requirements.
