About the role
Tailscale is seeking a dedicated Frontend Engineer to shape the future of our web console. You will be instrumental in developing the core infrastructure and user experience for our next-generation platform. This role involves a blend of product and platform engineering, focusing on secure identity systems and a unified console experience.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Define and guide the frontend architecture for Tailscale's upcoming web console, including application structure and maintainability.
- Construct frontend infrastructure and platform capabilities that allow multiple Tailscale products to operate within a single console.
- Focus on identity-related frontend systems, such as authentication, session management, and secure cross-origin integrations.
- Develop and maintain cross-origin authentication and session infrastructure between the console and other services.
- Create frontend architecture patterns and tools to help engineers build accessible, production-ready user interfaces efficiently.
- Collaborate with Product Design to translate complex infrastructure and identity concepts into user-friendly interfaces.
- Partner with Growth, Design, Product, and other engineering teams on experimentation and feature rollout.
- Establish and enhance frontend testing strategies for the console.
- Improve local development workflows, build pipelines, and release processes.
- Raise the standard for frontend engineering quality through technical leadership and mentorship.
- Participate in an on-call rotation for incident triage and mitigation.
Requirements
- Significant experience building and managing React applications in a production environment.
- A thorough understanding of web platform fundamentals, including HTTP, browser security, authentication, cookies, CORS, and CSRF.
- Experience creating internal platforms, frameworks, or shared libraries that provide strong guidance for other teams.
- Proven ability to drive a unified console or platform vision across different frontend codebases.
- Strong judgment in frontend architecture, knowing when to standardize, abstract, and maintain system clarity.
- Experience designing scalable frontend testing strategies that increase confidence while simplifying complexity for product engineers.
- Comfort collaborating across different disciplines, including design, growth, infrastructure, and developer tooling.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain technical trade-offs and influence technical direction.
- A high degree of ownership and autonomy, with the capacity to identify and address problems proactively.
Nice to have
- Experience designing frontend codebases and tooling optimized for AI-assisted development.
- Familiarity with design systems, component libraries, and connecting design tooling to production workflows.
- Experience with feature flagging, analytics, experimentation systems, and progressive delivery.
- Background working on identity, admin, B2B SaaS, or security-sensitive product areas.

- Salary range: $181,000 - $226,000 USD
- Compensation includes base salary, equity, and comprehensive benefits.
