Billing Engineer

About the role

Tailscale is looking for a software engineer to manage our billing infrastructure and pricing systems. You will own the full product lifecycle for billing features, working alongside product managers and designers to build solutions for our users.

What you'll do

• Design and maintain core billing software components and documentation.
• Build integrations with third-party billing services.
• Create logic for usage-based, subscription, and rating models.
• Ensure data integrity for customer usage reporting.
• Automate recurring billing tasks and financial reconciliation.
• Lead incident response and root cause analysis for billing systems.
• Collaborate with finance, sales, and product teams on custom billing requirements.
• Establish observability and error handling for the billing pipeline.

Requirements

• Background in backend engineering with a focus on financial systems or payments.
• Expertise in SaaS billing models including entitlements, proration, and usage-based pricing.
• Experience with third-party billing platforms like Stripe, Metronome, Orb, or Zuora.
• Proficiency with SQL and data modeling for financial metrics.
• Experience managing distributed systems, microservices, and event-driven architectures.
• Ability to write production-quality code in Go or a willingness to learn it.
• Experience building or maintaining internal billing APIs.
