Senior Data Scientist
Job description
About the role
Sytac builds high-performing engineering teams for leading organizations, combining a pragmatic, people-first culture with technical craftsmanship to give engineers autonomy in real production environments. For one of our key clients in the Netherlands, we are looking for a Data Scientist - GraphRAG who wants to be at the forefront of AI transformation in one of Europe's largest financial institutions. You will join a specialized team leveraging graph technology to enhance GenAI capabilities bank-wide, including critical social impact initiatives such as the fight against financial crime. You will explore, validate, and develop how GraphRAG can ground Large Language Models with structured knowledge, turning those experiments into production-ready solutions that scale across the organisation.
Key facts
What you'll do
Design and deliver responsible, cost-effective GraphRAG solutions that process large, unstructured datasets, including transaction data from over 8 million customers, while ensuring robust performance and scalability. Analyse and optimise critical code to improve performance, reliability, and scalability across the data platform, identifying bottlenecks and refining algorithms for production workloads. Transform explorational notebooks into a maintainable, testable, and production-ready codebase, ensuring that experimental insights can be reliably reproduced and extended. Create reusable building blocks, libraries, and abstractions that can be adopted across the bank, making solutions standardised, scalable, and built to last through clear interfaces and documentation. Lead the sharing of best practices, mentor teammates, and foster a culture of engineering excellence through code reviews, pair programming, and knowledge transfer sessions. Experiment with graph-based retrieval strategies and integrate them within the Data & Analytics landscape, connecting graph methods with existing data pipelines and tooling. Tackle complex technical challenges, elevate the skills of those around you, and drive continuous improvement in both technical implementations and team capabilities. Collaborate closely with data engineers, domain experts, and stakeholders to translate business requirements into effective graph and retrieval strategies that support decision-making. Ensure solutions are aligned with governance, security, and compliance requirements, especially in contexts with significant social impact such as financial crime prevention. Continuously evaluate outcomes, iterate on designs, and refine systems to improve accuracy, efficiency, and user experience over time.
Requirements
Hold a Bachelor's or Master's degree in Data Science, Applied Mathematics, IT, or a related field, providing a strong theoretical foundation for advanced data science work. Bring at least 5 years of experience as a Data Scientist with a strong focus on software engineering, demonstrating depth in building production systems rather than only modelling. Show strong Python expertise and solid object-oriented programming and software engineering skills, which are non-negotiable for success in this role. Demonstrate proficiency with Git, Databricks, PySpark, and cloud platforms, especially Azure, to operate effectively in the existing data stack. Exhibit a passion for building clean, well-structured, maintainable, and testable solutions that are designed for scale, reuse, and long-term evolution. Possess a solid understanding of statistical modelling and machine learning, enabling you to apply appropriate methods to complex financial and graph-based problems. Display curiosity, proactiveness, collaboration, and openness to learning, actively contributing to team growth and knowledge sharing. Communicate effectively in strong English, both spoken and written, ensuring clarity in technical discussions and documentation.
Nice to have
Only if explicitly stated in the source, there are no preferred items listed beyond the core requirements and technical skills described in the role.
