About the role
You own the end-to-end risk assessment for a defined portfolio of North American merchants, making underwriting decisions that balance growth opportunity with credit loss mitigation. You evaluate complex business models and financial statements to determine the creditworthiness of our largest and fastest growing customers. You translate nuanced financial data into clear narratives that justify risk decisions and support strategic portfolio management. You partner closely with cross-functional stakeholders including Sales, Legal, Treasury, and Finance to align on risk appetite and execution. You contribute to refining underwriting methodologies and key performance indicators that protect Stripe while enabling scalable growth. You act as a trusted advisor to enterprise customers, explaining decisions and supporting their long term success on the platform. You maintain deep market and industry knowledge to identify emerging risks and opportunities within your portfolio. You communicate insights upward to senior management to inform pricing, policy, and strategic initiatives.

What you'll do
- Conduct in-depth evaluations of business models and financial statements for North American merchant partners.
- Develop and communicate credit risk recommendations that reduce Stripe's exposure while supporting partner growth objectives.
- Manage portfolio risk by analyzing performance trends across industries, geographies, and operating models.
- Synthesize complex financial data into cohesive narratives that highlight credit risks and dynamic mitigation strategies.
- Deliver analysis and insights that inform senior management decisions on onboarding, pricing, and portfolio strategy.
- Support the enhancement of underwriting tools and processes to meet credit loss targets and portfolio coverage metrics.
- Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to provide solutions and support for merchants across North America.
- Monitor book of business to identify trends, outliers, and risks that require intervention or escalation.
- Partner with Sales and Finance to design credit solutions that align with commercial goals and risk tolerance.
- Contribute to documentation, frameworks, and playbooks that standardize underwriting practices and improve team efficiency.
- Work closely with Legal and Treasury to ensure compliance with regulations and alignment on cash flow risk management.
- Mentor junior analysts and share best practices to elevate the capability of the North America Strategy Risk team.
Requirements
- Bring a minimum of 3 years of relevant experience focused on commercial credit underwriting, financial risk modeling, and cash flow forecasting.
- Hold a Bachelor's degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, or another related quantitative field.
- Demonstrate strong knowledge of accounting principles and the ability to evaluate financial statements and business models across diverse industries.
- Show an ability to transform business and financial data into clear narratives that outline potential credit risks and present mitigation strategies.
- Communicate effectively using strong written, verbal, and analytical skills in a fast-paced, matrixed environment.
- Maintain attention to detail while managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced, high-stakes setting.
- Interact comfortably with C-level executives such as CFOs and CEOs of our largest merchants.
- Exhibit deep empathy for entrepreneurs and a motivation to solve problems that empower businesses to succeed.
