5. Our reusable Talon testbeds are designed to provide economical access to hypersonic environments, yielding vital flight data for system validation and swift technology deployment. We work closely with our partners to drive advancements that are essential for national security. We are currently seeking a Propulsion Engineer to spearhead the development and integration of Solid Rocket Motor (SRM) systems tailored for hypersonic applications. This position will place you as the lead engineer for SRM, requiring close collaboration with suppliers throughout the various phases of design, development, testing, and flight operations. A solid foundation in aerospace development and systems integration is crucial for success in this role.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Lead the oversight of requirements and interfaces throughout the design, development, testing, assembly, integration, and flight operations of the Solid Rocket Motor (SRM).
- Ensure supplier compliance with project specifications by closely monitoring their activities.
- Organize and facilitate weekly meetings and technical reviews with SRM suppliers to ensure alignment and progress.
- Travel to supplier facilities to observe and engage in critical manufacturing and testing processes as required.
- Analyze post-test data and collaborate with the SRM supplier to interpret results effectively.
- Create performance models that support guidance, navigation, and control (GN&C) systems.
- Perform ballistic and thermal analyses to validate the work conducted by suppliers.
- Define specifications and assist in the design of ground support equipment (GSE) necessary for SRM operations.
- Manage the logistics related to SRM deliveries, including receiving and conducting inspections.
- Travel to test ranges to aid in the installation and flight testing of SRMs.
- Maintain consistent communication with the lead for hypersonic vehicle propulsion to ensure alignment on project goals.
- Demonstrate integrity and accountability in meeting commitments and project deadlines.
Requirements
- Demonstrated experience in the design, development, testing, and operational phases of solid rocket motors.
- A strong understanding of ballistic, thermal, and combustion modeling is highly advantageous.
- Proven experience in managing suppliers and providing technical guidance to a broader engineering team.
- Familiarity with solid rocket motor manufacturing processes, including composite case winding and propellant handling techniques.
- Ability to effectively analyze, interpret, and communicate post-test data to various stakeholders.
- Excellent communication skills to articulate technical challenges and solutions to a diverse audience.
- Self-driven with the capability to work autonomously and take initiative.
- Flexibility to quickly adapt to shifting priorities and project demands.
Nice to have
- Experience with advanced propulsion systems or hypersonic technologies.
- Familiarity with regulatory compliance and safety standards in aerospace engineering.
- Previous involvement in government or military aerospace projects.
Skills & tools
- Proficient in the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience with Solid Performance Program (SPP) and/or Chemical Equilibrium with Applications (CEA) software.
- Scientific programming capabilities in languages such as Python, MATLAB, Simulink, C/C++, etc.
Practical notes
- This role requires travel, which is estimated to be between 15-30% of the time.
- The position is based in Mojave, CA, a hub for aerospace testing and development.
Education & Experience
- For senior-level candidates: A Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from an accredited institution along with 5-10 years of relevant engineering experience, or a comparable combination of education and experience. The salary range for this level is between $120,500 and $158,000.
- For staff-level candidates: A Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from an accredited institution and 10-20 years of engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. The salary range for this level is between $157,000 and $206,000.
