Lead AFSS Avionics Engineer

About the role

Stratolaunch is dedicated to pioneering advancements in hypersonic technology through the creation of reusable testing platforms. We are in search of an experienced Avionics Engineer to lead the technical development of our Autonomous Flight Safety System (AFSS) and Flight Termination Systems (FTS) tailored for air-launched hypersonic vehicles. This role will encompass integration and testing while adhering to established safety protocols, as well as collaborating closely with range safety teams.

What you'll do

• Direct the development and evaluation of the AFSS and FTS at the subsystem level, ensuring all components meet safety and performance standards.
• Collaborate with range safety teams to guarantee that all documentation related to AFSS and FTS is thoroughly reviewed and sanctioned.
• Aid in the design and acquisition of Hardware in the Loop systems for the AFSS, ensuring they meet operational requirements.
• Engage in flight test planning for integrated missions that involve carrier aircraft, pylons, and hypersonic vehicles.
• Work alongside range safety personnel to define and establish technical specifications for both AFSS and FTS.
• Coordinate and oversee range testing activities to ensure compliance with safety and operational standards.
• Provide support during design reviews throughout the vehicle development lifecycle, ensuring all systems are integrated effectively.
• Identify potential risks associated with avionics systems and develop strategies to mitigate them.
• Maintain ongoing communication with the Avionics Chief Engineer and the Project Manager for FTS/AFSS to ensure alignment on project goals.
• Contribute to the integration of complex aerospace systems, ensuring that all components function seamlessly together.

Requirements

• A background in electrical engineering, aircraft systems, or launch vehicle integration is essential.
• Demonstrated experience with Flight Termination Systems (FTS) and/or Autonomous Flight Safety Systems (AFSS), including key components like receivers and safe-and-arm devices.
• Proven track record in designing avionics systems utilizing both commercial off-the-shelf and custom hardware solutions.
• Familiarity with RCC-319 and RCC-324 safety requirements is highly desirable.
• Ability to mentor less experienced engineers and lead cross-functional teams effectively.
• Experience in test planning, execution, and risk management processes is crucial.
• Excellent communication skills to articulate technical challenges to a variety of audiences.
• Self-driven with the ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks efficiently.
• Flexibility to adapt to changing priorities and project requirements.
• Must be eligible to obtain and maintain a Department of Defense security clearance.

Nice to have

• Experience with advanced avionics design tools and simulation software.
• Knowledge of regulatory compliance and safety standards in aerospace engineering.
• Familiarity with project management methodologies and tools.

Skills & tools

• Proficient in engineering programming tools such as Matlab or similar software.
• Competent in using Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Outlook.
• Experience with configuration management systems like Git, Bitbucket, or JIRA for version control and project tracking.

Practical notes

• This position is located in Mojave, CA.
• Occasional travel may be necessary, estimated to be less than 10% of the time.
• The role may require the operation of company vehicles as part of job responsibilities.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

• Senior Level ($120,500-$158,000): Requires a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline along with 5-10 years of engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Staff Level ($157,000-$206,000): Requires a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline along with 10-20 years of engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Principal Level ($181,000-$237,200): Requires a Bachelor's degree in a relevant discipline along with 20-25 years of engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
