About the role

Stratolaunch is focused on advancing technology for hypersonic testing. We are looking for a skilled Flight Software Engineer to take charge of developing and testing software for our autonomous hypersonic test vehicle. This position involves collaboration across various phases of the software development lifecycle, working closely with the Vehicle Management System team.

What you'll do

• Design and implement new flight software for hypersonic air-launch vehicle systems.
• Oversee the integration of complex aerospace systems and ensure their functionality.
• Work with stakeholders to establish software requirements and develop effective solutions.
• Assist in the architecture development of flight software, from concept to implementation.
• Conduct design and analysis to support component development.
• Create interface documents to facilitate hardware integration.
• Develop software components for sensor and effector control.
• Establish software testing processes to ensure thorough verification and validation.
• Support various hardware tests with tailored software solutions.
• Provide technical leadership for projects within the broader program.
• Uphold integrity and accountability in all commitments.
• Travel as necessary to support departmental goals.

Requirements

• Proven ability to fulfill the essential responsibilities outlined.
• Experience in developing real-time embedded software.
• Familiarity with serial communications, software testing, and computer networking.
• Capacity to adapt quickly to shifting priorities.
• Strong initiative and organizational skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively with the VMS lead.
• Eligibility to obtain and maintain a security clearance.

Skills & tools

• Proficient in C++ programming.

Practical notes

• This position is primarily based in Mojave, CA, with a preference for on-site work. However, a hybrid work arrangement may be considered for highly qualified candidates, requiring approximately 75% on-site attendance.
• Travel requirements are minimal, estimated at less than 5%.

Education & experience

• Senior level ($120,500 - $158,000): Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 5-10 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Staff level ($157,000 - $206,000): Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 10-20 years of related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Principal level ($181,000 - $237,300): Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and over 20 years of engineering experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience in developing, testing, and integrating flight computer or vehicle management software.
• Familiarity with Agile Software Development practices.
• Knowledge of VxWorks operating systems and 1553 communication protocols.
• TS/SCI security clearance is a plus.

Preferred computer skills

• Experience with configuration management tools such as Jira, Bitbucket, or Git.
• Proficiency in Matlab/Simulink and/or Python is advantageous.

Base salary and leveling are determined on a case-by-case basis, taking into account factors such as location, educational background, and the skills and experience demonstrated during the interview process.

High-speed flight test services form the core work of this American aerospace team. Company roots trace to 2011, created by Paul Allen and Burt Rutan to explore air-launched space transport. Home base is Seattle. Earlier collaboration on SpaceShipOne informed the project. New ownership arrived in 2019 through Cerberus Capital Management. Funding remains private. Operations follow a non-traditional defense contractor model, focusing on test missions and system development under continued private investment.
