Infrastructure Engineer
Job description
Infrastructure Engineer at Spear Ai.
About the role
You will manage the full lifecycle of maritime data systems, designing cloud architectures, enforcing compliance requirements, and deploying secure platforms that defense operations rely on. You will translate complex domain requirements into reliable services that remain available during critical missions. The position involves close collaboration with hardware and software teams to ensure that infrastructure supports sensor inputs, data pipelines, and operational constraints. You will design resilient cloud architectures that span public regions and isolated enclaves to ensure continuous operations for defense applications. You will automate infrastructure definitions using code, binding networking, storage, and policy into versioned templates that multiple teams can reuse. You will integrate systems that stream sonobuoy data, tuning pipelines for sensor formats and real-time data constraints. This role requires U.S. citizenship and the ability to obtain TS/SCI clearance, with potential travel to customer sites. You will partner with undersea hardware groups to align delivery schedules with mission needs and platform test cycles.
Key facts
What you'll do
You will design resilient cloud architectures that span public regions and isolated enclaves to ensure continuous operations for defense applications. You will automate infrastructure definitions using code, binding networking, storage, and policy into versioned templates that multiple teams can reuse. You will orchestrate pipelines that validate, scan, and release changes, keeping quality gates strict while reducing deployment friction. You will operate observability stacks that trace requests, capture errors, and expose metrics for critical services, ensuring performance and reliability. You will harden environments to meet defense standards, aligning configurations with required control frameworks such as CMMC, PCI, and SOC. You will manage secrets and runtime configurations to maintain controlled access across teams and deployment targets. You will integrate systems that stream sonobuoy data, tuning pipelines for sensor formats and real-time data constraints. You will partner with undersea hardware groups to align delivery schedules with mission needs and platform test cycles. You will configure environments that remain secure and functional without direct internet access to support air-gapped deployments. You will implement versioned infrastructure templates that promote reuse and consistency across engineering teams and operational contexts.
Requirements
You must have expertise in Infrastructure as Code using Pulumi or Terraform, writing definitions that remain consistent and reliable across teams and environments. You must have experience managing containers and orchestration, running workloads on Kubernetes clusters in public cloud and constrained, air-gapped settings. You must have hands-on experience with GitHub workflows, wiring builds, tests, and security checks into dependable deployment chains. You must be proficient in operating on AWS and related platforms, sizing services and optimizing costs for long-running defense workloads. You must understand network protocols and addressing schemes to secure paths between services and external sensors. You must practice typed programming in Go and TypeScript, delivering code that is testable, readable, and maintainable over time. You must be familiar with cybersecurity compliance frameworks such as CMMC, PCI, and SOC, embedding checks that keep systems audit-ready. You must have experience supporting air-gapped rollouts, configuring environments that remain secure and functional without direct internet access. You must be eligible to work in the United States without sponsorship and hold U.S. citizenship. You must be able to obtain TS/SCI clearance to meet defense requirements for this position.
Nice to have
Experience with monorepo layouts, stream-based architectures, or IoT integrations is helpful but optional. Background in change data capture, digital signal processing, or geospatial analysis and GIS may be advantageous when handling sensor and streaming workloads.
Practical notes
This is a full-time engagement. U.S. citizenship is required, and eligibility to work in the United States without sponsorship is required. Travel to customer sites may be required. Candidates must obtain TS/SCI clearance. The position is based in Suitland, Maryland with on-site expectations.
Why work with us
You will ship work that reaches deployed systems used in defense contexts, rather than long-term projects with delayed impact. Your contributions will support capabilities integrated with sonobuoys and deployed on U.S. submarines. The organization is growing responsibly, balancing hiring needs with a values-driven team that cares about mission outcomes. Work is remote, with collaboration in real time on Slack and asynchronous communication via GitHub. The company is profitable, backed by investors, and committed to sustainable growth. You are encouraged to sweat the details, and you will not need to manage bureaucracy or move slowly due to process. The culture is flat, enabling direct interaction with leadership and rapid contribution to high-impact projects.
What we expect from you
You are fanatical about polish, ensuring that code is linted, formatted, fully typed, and has thorough test coverage. You care about correctness, understanding that downstream consumers depend on the libraries and services you build. You obsess over performance, tracking Lighthouse scores and query latency as core engineering indicators. You dive deep into problems, building prototypes and running experiments to validate understanding. You follow platform developments closely and anticipate upcoming features. You are an effective teacher, breaking down concepts for specific audiences and generating excitement around implementation.
Benefits
You will receive unlimited PTO to maintain work-life balance and recharge as needed. Dedicated sick time ensures that your health and well-being are prioritized. Comprehensive health and benefits coverage includes medical, dental, and vision protection for you and your family. You will observe 11 paid holidays annually to support time with family and personal commitments. Professional development opportunities and educational resources will help you grow your skills and advance your career. The environment is collaborative, supporting direct engagement with leadership within a flat organizational structure.
