About the role
SpaceX is seeking a skilled machinist to contribute to the development of technologies for human exploration of Mars. This role involves precise machining of various components, from quick-turn prototypes to recurring production parts. You will be responsible for programming, setting up, and operating a range of CNC and manual machines, ensuring high quality and efficiency in all operations.

What you'll do
- Program and machine high-precision, rapid-turn projects and recurring production tasks
- Machine raw materials, welded assemblies, and modify existing parts
- Execute machining operations based on blueprints, drawings, verbal instructions, and models
- Set up, operate, and validate programs on equipment including Proto Trak CNC mills (horizontal and vertical), Proto Trak CNC lathes, manual mills/lathes, and other standard machine shop tools
- Analyze part processes to enhance efficiency and quality by collaborating with engineers and designers
- Provide feedback to engineers and designers, including early process reviews, and incorporate customer feedback to improve machine quality
- Uphold SpaceX processes, procedures, and safety standards at company facilities
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 3+ years of professional experience operating CNC mills or lathes
- 3+ years of professional experience reading G-code and programming toolpaths for CNC machines
- Basic understanding of cutting tools, and appropriate speeds and feeds for various material types
- Ability to read engineering prints and proficiently interpret GD&T features
- Basic knowledge and experience in developing work holding and fixturing solutions for producing quality, repeatable parts
- Ability to pass an Air Force background check for Vandenberg Space Force Base
- Available to work all required shift hours, including overtime and weekends as needed (1st shift is 5 AM - 5 PM)
- Capable of lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted
- Able to perform duties requiring standing, kneeling, crouching, twisting upper body, working in cramped positions, small openings, and climbing hand over hand
- Able to work at heights up to 100 feet
- Willingness to work in extreme outdoor environments (heat, cold, rain)
- Comfortable working in environments with fumes, odors, and noise
- Ability to travel to other sites if required
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee to comply with ITAR regulations
Nice to have
- Ability to run multi-axis and multi-tasking programs
- Ability to set up and operate Proto Trak CNC mills and lathes
- Proficiency with precision measurement tools like dial indicators, bore gauges, micrometers, and calipers
- Experience with Fanuc, Hurco, and Haas machine tool controls
- Experience with Renishaw probes
- Experience with Siemens NX, Fusion360, or similar CAD/CAM programs
- Experience with Mastercam 2019+
- Desire to collaborate across multiple teams for multidisciplinary projects
- Strong communication skills and a drive to achieve company goals in a challenging environment
- Strong desire to maintain shop cleanliness, organization, and a lean manufacturing environment

Practical notes
This role offers a pay range for Level 1: $23.00 - $29.75, Level 2: $28.50 - $35.75, Level 3: $34.00 - $41.75. Actual level and salary depend on job knowledge, skills, education, and experience. The total compensation package includes potential long-term incentives (stock or cash awards), discretionary bonuses, and an Employee Stock Purchase Plan.
