Senior Software Engineer, Data
About the role
This is a key individual contributor position on our platform team. You will be responsible for developing large-scale data processing systems and distributed infrastructure that support Sidecar Health's core offerings. You will manage complex and undefined challenges from initial design through to deployment and ongoing operation.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Develop and maintain high-volume, distributed data processing systems and platform infrastructure, overseeing the entire lifecycle from conception to production.
- Break down large, unclear projects into structured, actionable plans that the team can execute concurrently.
- Write production-ready Python code that is well-structured, type-safe, and built for longevity, not simple scripts.
- Optimize SQL queries, design data models, and analyze execution plans for large datasets.
- Define interfaces and contracts between frontend applications, backend services, and infrastructure components.
- Provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers, and collaborate with leadership on technical strategy and roadmap decisions.
- Implement system monitoring and alerting, focusing on what needs to be observed and understood.
Requirements
- A minimum of 5 years of professional software engineering experience, including direct responsibility for production systems.
- Advanced skills in Python, including type checking (mypy) and data validation (Pydantic), and experience with SQL at scale.
- Extensive experience in building and operating distributed data pipelines and event-driven architectures.
- Practical experience with AWS services such as Lambda, SQS, IAM, and CloudWatch, with a focus on cost-effective design.
- Proficiency in using Docker for development and deployment.
- Consistent and effective use of AI tools, such as Claude or Cursor, in your daily work.
- Experience with observability tools like Datadog or similar platforms.
- A Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related technical field.
- Must reside in California.
Nice to have
- Familiarity with frameworks and tools such as FastAPI, Django, SQLAlchemy, Celery, or Infrastructure-as-Code solutions like Terraform or CDK.
