Senior Payments Engineer - Acquiring & Payment Processing

Sezzle is looking for a Senior Payments Engineer to enhance and scale the core systems responsible for acquiring and processing payments. This backend-focused position involves deep integration with payment processors and gateways, ensuring accurate and reliable fund movement.

What you'll do

Develop backend services in Golang that connect with payment processors, gateways, and card networks.

Manage critical money movement processes from start to finish, including authorizations, captures, settlements, refunds, reconciliations, and dispute handling.

Construct fault-tolerant and auditable transaction processing within a distributed system, utilizing patterns like transactional outboxes and message queues (Kafka, SQS, RabbitMQ).

Operate within PCI DSS compliance, handling tokenization, network tokens, secure payment data, and 3DS/SCA flows.

Monitor payment system performance, including authorization rates, processor efficiency, latency, and settlement accuracy, to drive ongoing improvements.

Utilize AI tools such as Claude or similar LLMs daily to streamline design, coding, research, testing, and documentation, adhering to Sezzle's security protocols.

Mentor other engineers and contribute to raising the technical standards of the team.

Requirements

Possess 7 or more years of experience in backend or full-stack engineering, with significant time dedicated to payments, fintech, or money movement systems.

Demonstrate strong proficiency in Golang, or comparable experience in Python, for building and serving REST APIs.

Have practical experience integrating with payment processors, gateways, or acquiring systems, and a solid understanding of payment fundamentals like authorization versus settlement, tokenization, idempotency, reconciliation, and chargebacks/disputes.

Experience with distributed, cloud-based architectures and patterns such as transactional outboxes or message queuing systems (Kafka, SQS, RabbitMQ).

Show proven, hands-on experience using AI tools like Claude or equivalent LLMs to boost productivity, aid research, and improve communication.

Hold a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.

Nice to have

Direct experience with components of the payments acquiring ecosystem, such as Adyen, Stripe, Marqeta, or Fiserv.

Familiarity with PCI DSS, 3DS/SCA, network tokenization, or payment compliance regulations.

Experience with SQL-based RDBMS through an ORM tool.

Comfort using observability platforms like Prometheus, Datadog, or New Relic for production monitoring and alerting.

DevOps experience with CI/CD pipelines, and familiarity with containerized microservices deployed on Kubernetes using AWS.

A history of successfully delivering commercial APIs and web applications, and prioritizing solutions based on stakeholder and customer input.
