About the role

You will architect and implement core backend systems that capture and structure how teams work into actionable intelligence for both human users and AI agents. You will own the reliability and performance of document generation pipelines that serve millions of daily interactions across a platform trusted by more than 94 percent of Fortune 500 companies. You will translate complex product requirements into scalable software solutions while maintaining a sharp focus on end user experience and data integrity. You will collaborate closely with product, design, and frontend teams to ensure backend services align with evolving user workflows and business objectives. You will champion engineering best practices, including automated testing and test-driven development, to maintain a robust and maintainable codebase. You will optimize endpoint response times and database query efficiency to support high-traffic scenarios without degradation. You will contribute to the long-term technical strategy of the platform by building foundational services that enable rapid and safe experimentation. You will communicate technical trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders to guide informed decision-making.

What you'll do

Design and implement scalable backend services using Python to support document capture, processing, and delivery at global scale.

Optimize endpoint performance and database query efficiency to ensure fast and consistent response times for millions of users.

Collaborate with product managers and designers to translate workflow requirements into resilient backend architectures and APIs.

Lead the implementation of automated testing strategies and test-driven development practices across all backend services.

Build and maintain integrations with document processing systems and content management workflows to enable seamless export and viewing experiences.

Develop and operate infrastructure as code using Terraform on Amazon Web Services to support reliable deployment and resource management.

Implement caching strategies and data store optimizations using Redis to improve application throughput and reduce latency.

Create and maintain task processing pipelines with Celery and AmazonMQ to handle asynchronous jobs reliably at scale.

Partner with frontend engineers to define API contracts and ensure smooth data flow between backend services and user interfaces.

Mentor junior engineers by sharing knowledge of backend best practices, code quality standards, and operational excellence.

Monitor production systems to identify performance bottlenecks and drive continuous improvements in reliability and scalability.

Contribute to documentation and internal tools that streamline developer workflows and improve cross-team collaboration.

Participate in on-call rotations to support incident response and maintain high availability of critical platform components.

Evaluate and adopt new technologies where appropriate to solve complex problems in document workflow automation and knowledge capture.

Engage in regular code reviews to uphold engineering standards and ensure consistency across the backend codebase.

Requirements

You must have 5 or more years of experience building backend applications at high scale and availability in production environments.

You must possess extensive hands-on experience with the Python programming language and its ecosystem of libraries and tools.

You must demonstrate a proven ability to optimize endpoint performance and database query efficiency under heavy load conditions.

You must show strong advocacy for automated testing and test-driven development practices within backend engineering workflows.

You must have a track record of implementing and enforcing engineering best practices across backend systems and services.

You must exhibit a user-centric mindset with empathy for end users and a relentless drive for delivering high quality work.

You must have experience working on systems that serve millions of users or operate in high-traffic application scenarios.

You must be able to collaborate effectively across product, design, and frontend engineering teams to align on shared objectives.

You must be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment where priorities may shift and collaboration remains essential.

You must communicate technical decisions and trade-offs clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders during discussions and reviews.

You must have experience with version control systems and collaborative code review workflows in a team-based software development setting.

You must be willing to work a hybrid schedule that includes three days in the San Francisco office as part of the role.

You must be eligible to work in the country where the position is based without requiring additional visa sponsorship for this role.

You must be available to start within a reasonable timeframe as defined by the hiring team.

Nice to have

Prior experience working with the Django web framework for backend application development to build and maintain scalable APIs.

Background at a startup or fast-moving environment where speed, iteration, and experimentation are critical to delivering results.

Practical notes

This is a full-time remote position with a hybrid component based in San Francisco, California.

The office is located in San Francisco and team members work from the office three days per week.
