Senior Combat Designer

About the role

We are seeking a Senior Combat Designer to join the Star Trek Fleet Command team. You will help evolve our 4X MMO by creating engaging combat systems that define how millions of players progress and compete.

What you'll do

• Manage combat balance and design for PvE, PvP, and co-op modes.
• Develop new gameplay features involving ships, officers, ship technology, and hostile encounters.
• Create systemic designs that encourage long-term player investment and agency.
• Use Excel and Google Sheets to model economic loops, progression pacing, and combat difficulty.
• Partner with product managers, analysts, engineers, and designers to implement new features.
• Analyze player feedback and performance data to iterate on designs.
• Plan for system scalability and long-term content health.
• Provide mentorship to junior design staff.

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in combat and gameplay design for live, free-to-play titles, ideally within the strategy, 4X, or MMO genres.
• Ability to manage a feature from initial vision through launch and post-release iteration.
• Proven history of delivering content that balances monetization, engagement, and fun.
• Proficiency in using data and KPI targets to inform balance adjustments.
• Expert skill in using spreadsheets to manage resource flow, power curves, and pacing.
• Experience working within cross-functional teams in a live production setting.

Nice to have

• Background in squad RPGs or character collection games.
• Experience with server lifecycle planning, live operations, or event design.
• Familiarity with simulation tools, SQL, or scripting.
• Previous involvement in co-op or alliance-based gameplay for large-scale titles.
• Interest in sci-fi, Star Trek, or strategic social gaming.
• Prior experience leading or mentoring junior designers.
