About the role
Sanabenefits is simplifying healthcare for small businesses. We are seeking an Underwriter to support our level-funded product for new business. This role is crucial for achieving profitable expansion while presenting attractive offers to potential clients. You will work at the intersection of underwriting strategy and sales, collaborating with various teams to assess risk, set pricing, and advance small group underwriting practices.

What you'll do
- Assess the risk associated with employer groups and determine appropriate pricing for level-funded plans.
- Work with the Sales team to develop competitive proposals that secure new business without sacrificing profitability.
- Analyze risk factors and make data-informed decisions, balancing risk tolerance with growth objectives.
- Contribute to the design and refinement of underwriting standards, procedures, and tools as the company grows.
- Coordinate with Product, Actuarial, and Customer Success teams to enhance the overall member experience.
- Track underwriting results and market trends to guide ongoing pricing and risk management strategies.
Requirements
- A minimum of 3 years of experience in underwriting, with a preference for work involving small groups or level-funded products.
- A solid understanding of health insurance pricing, risk evaluation, and underwriting guidelines.
- The ability to make calculated decisions to support business objectives, particularly within a rapidly changing startup environment.
- Strong communication skills, capable of explaining underwriting decisions to individuals without a technical background.
- A highly collaborative and proactive approach, with the ability to build effective working relationships across different departments.
- Comfort working in ambiguous situations and a dedication to continuous improvement.
- Experience in the small group market with an insurtech, carrier, or third-party administrator.
- Proficiency in data analysis, including using tools like Excel.
