Senior+ Applied Scientist

About the role

Samsara is seeking an experienced scientist to develop machine learning and computer vision applications that derive value from our massive sensor and camera data ecosystem. You will contribute to our research and development roadmap, directly influencing product pillars that improve safety and efficiency for global physical operations.

What you'll do

• Design, refine, and optimize machine learning and computer vision models to address specific operational challenges.
• Process petabyte-scale data from our camera and sensor network to create new model architectures.
• Improve inference performance by optimizing models for both backend systems and edge hardware.
• Collaborate with firmware and full-stack engineering teams to ensure efficient deployment and cost-effective performance.
• Monitor academic and industry research to integrate novel technologies into our product offerings.
• Partner with product managers to translate customer requirements into technical solutions.

Requirements

• BS or MS in Computer Science or a related technical field with at least 5 years of experience in Applied Science or Machine Learning, specifically within computer vision.
• Alternatively, a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Applied Math, Physics, Statistics, or a related quantitative discipline with at least 3 years of computer vision experience.
• Proficiency in Python, C++, Golang, or Java.
• Experience with machine learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or Spark.
• Ability to manage code and data processing workflows using GitHub.
• Legal right to work in the United States.

Nice to have

• Background in deploying and optimizing machine learning models directly on edge devices.
• Experience managing and implementing models on datasets exceeding 100,000 to 1,000,000 samples.
• Expertise in state-of-the-art techniques for road object detection, tracking, and segmentation.
• Familiarity with backend or full-stack development to navigate data structures and system dependencies.
