Software Engineer - Backend Platform at Rover.
About the role
Join the Backend Platform and Support team to maintain the core data infrastructure powering our global pet care network. You will work alongside our lead Database Engineer to optimize performance, manage migrations, and build automation that keeps our systems stable and scalable.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Manage database operations including access control, instance scaling, and performance tuning for AWS RDS.
- Execute major and minor database upgrades and design backup strategies for high availability.
- Build and maintain self-service automation tools, such as our Automated Data Model Change approval system.
- Collaborate with product teams on schema migrations, query optimization, and infrastructure management using Terraform.
- Monitor system health using Datadog, Cloudwatch, Sentry, and Splunk, and participate in 24/7 on-call rotations.
- Develop Python scripts to assist with Django migrations and model tuning.
- Ensure compliance requirements are met across our production environments.
Requirements
- 3+ years of experience as a Fullstack or Backend Engineer, ideally with Django and Python.
- Degree in Computer Science or equivalent professional background.
- Deep understanding of database fundamentals, schema design, and hands-on experience with MySQL and PostgreSQL.
- Experience operating, maintaining, and troubleshooting production environments within AWS.
- Proficiency in infrastructure as code tools such as Terraform or CDK.
- Familiarity with monitoring and observability stacks like Datadog, Cloudwatch, or ELK.
- Ability to work from our Barcelona office on Mondays and Thursdays.

Practical notes
- Salary range: 62,722 to 76,027 EUR for the first year.
