Senior Software Engineer

About the role

Roku is modernizing its global big data platform to improve efficiency and reduce operational costs. We are seeking an experienced engineer to help architect and maintain systems that handle over 70 PB of data and millions of monthly queries.

What you'll do

• Optimize and tune existing big data pipelines while developing new infrastructure.
• Manage system costs and efficiency to ensure high performance.
• Modify underlying platform components and contribute improvements back to open source projects.
• Provide support for internal customers and participate in on-call rotations to maintain system stability.
• Utilize AI tools and automation to accelerate development workflows and scale your impact.

Requirements

• 7+ years of production experience building big data platforms using Spark, Trino, or similar technologies.
• Strong programming proficiency in JVM languages such as Java, Scala, or Kotlin.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems, algorithms, and data structures.
• Familiarity with the Apache Hadoop ecosystem, including Spark, Kafka, Hive, Iceberg, Delta Lake, Presto, Trino, and Pinot.
• Hands-on experience with public cloud environments like AWS or GCP.
• BS or MS degree in Computer Science or a related field.
• Demonstrated AI literacy and experience using agentic engineering tools like Claude Code, Cursor, or custom agent frameworks.

Nice to have

• Experience with at least three of the following: Airflow, Flink, Druid, or Storm.
