Rocket Lab Corporation is seeking a Launch Safety Software Intern to join their team based in Auckland, New Zealand. Key facts
What you'll do
Assist in the development of software applications used for launch safety analysis and monitoring across multiple mission phases
Write and maintain code for safety-critical software modules that support launch operations and vehicle health monitoring
Participate in code reviews and contribute to improving software quality standards within the engineering team
Help test and validate safety software components through structured testing procedures and documented verification protocols
Document software designs, test results, and operational procedures in clear and comprehensive technical reports
Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineers and mission planners on safety-related software development tasks
Support the integration of safety software with existing launch vehicle systems and ground infrastructure components
Contribute to the creation of automated tools that streamline safety assessment workflows and reduce manual effort
Attend team meetings and present progress updates on assigned software development tasks to project leads
Learn and apply industry-standard safety practices and software development methodologies in a professional setting
Investigate and resolve software defects related to launch safety systems in a timely and thorough manner
Requirements
Currently enrolled in a bachelor's or master's degree program in computer science, software engineering, or a closely related discipline
Demonstrated programming experience in at least one general-purpose language such as Python, C++, or Java
A strong interest in aerospace systems and launch vehicle safety operations
Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly in both written and verbal formats
Willingness to work in a collaborative team environment and accept constructive feedback from peers
Basic familiarity with version control systems and standard software development workflows
Prior coursework in data structures, algorithms, or software design is highly beneficial
Comfort with learning new tools and adapting to fast-paced development environments on a regular and consistent basis
Nice to have
Previous experience with safety-critical or real-time software development environments is highly valued
Familiarity with aerospace industry standards such as DO-178C or similar safety certification frameworks
Exposure to embedded systems programming or operating systems commonly used in flight software
Knowledge of statistical analysis methods applied to safety and reliability assessments in engineering
Understanding of software verification and validation processes in regulated development contexts
Experience with object-oriented programming principles and structured software design patterns
Skills & tools
Proficiency in programming languages including Python, C++, or Java
Experience with software testing, validation, and verification methodologies
Working knowledge of version control systems such as Git
Ability to create and maintain technical documentation and reports
Debugging and troubleshooting techniques for software applications in development
Basic understanding of software architecture, design patterns, and system integration
Familiarity with continuous integration and automated build pipelines for software projects

This internship is based at the Auckland, NZ office and is not a remote or work-from-home position
The internship duration and start date are subject to agreement between the candidate and Rocket Lab Corporation
