Rocket Lab is an end-to-end space company delivering responsive launch services, complete spacecraft design and manufacturing, payloads, satellite components, and more - all with the goal of opening access to space. The rockets and satellites we build and launch enable some of the most ambitious and vital space missions globally, supporting scientific exploration, Earth observation and missions to combat climate change, national security, and exciting new technology demonstrations. Our Electron rocket has become the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket annually and has delivered more than 230 satellites to orbit, all while we work to develop Neutron, our upcoming medium-lift, reusable launch vehicle for larger constellation deployment. Our Space Systems business designs and builds our extensive line of satellites, payloads, and their components, including spacecraft that have been selected to support NASA missions to the Moon and Mars and components used on the James Webb Space Telescope.
We are currently seeking a Senior Electric Propulsion Engineer for our propulsion engineering team based out of Long Beach, CA. As an Electric Propulsion Engineer, you are responsible for system-level and component-level ownership of space systems propulsion and fluidic development. These teams support our Space Systems division and lead cutting-edge programs for civil, commercial, and defense customers.
What you'll do
- Own development of new or existing products or systems, acting as technical lead to guide team through end-to-end development process
- Perform conceptual and detailed performance calculations, systems modelling, analysis, and system designs
- Gather, define, and manage requirements with precision and rigor
- Lead systems engineering activities and provide technical leadership within the team
- Plan, set up, execute tests, and analyze instrumentation and data to validate performance
- Communicate effectively with project stakeholders internally and external to the team
- Apply technical risk-based decision making to select the right solutions when facing engineering challenges
- Manage projects including schedule building, priority identification, tasking of engineers and technicians, and status communication to leadership
- Mentor and coach people within the team on both technical and professional development
- Define and maintain standards of excellence through documentation, training, coaching, and review of others' work
- Contribute to engineering process development and documentation specific to propulsion and fluidic domains
- Support the integration of propulsion subsystems with broader spacecraft and payload platforms
- Ensure compliance with customer, regulatory, and quality standards throughout the development lifecycle
- Drive innovation in electric propulsion technologies to meet evolving mission needs
Requirements
- 8+ years of experience in propulsion system development, or equivalent high-performance field
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related technical discipline; advanced degree preferred
- Demonstrated experience in system-level propulsion engineering and development
- Strong background in propulsion system testing, characterization, and data analysis
- Experience with fluidic components and systems relevant to electric propulsion
- Knowledge of space mission requirements and spaceflight system integration
- Ability to perform detailed modeling and performance analysis for propulsion systems
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for stakeholder interaction
- Proven capability to lead cross-functional engineering teams and manage priorities
- Experience with engineering tools, processes, and documentation standards in a regulated environment
- Willingness to travel as required for program support and testing activities
- Eligibility to obtain and maintain a U.S. government security clearance if required for the role
- Compliance with Rocket Lab's policies regarding citizenship and employment eligibility
- Commitment to working within the specified location and engagement terms

This role is a full-time engagement based in Long Beach, California. Travel may be required as necessary for program activities and testing.
