Job description
Software Engineer, Design Automation (Senior at reframesystems.
About the role
Join our team to build the core design automation platform that transforms high-level building plans into detailed manufacturing instructions. This senior, hands-on technical leadership position involves tackling complex problems to create a system that acts like a compiler for physical structures. You will develop the tools that translate architectural designs into precise production plans for our microfactories.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and construct the central pipeline for our design automation system, converting building designs into outputs ready for manufacturing.
- Simplify complex and unclear problem spaces into clear, lasting abstractions, breaking down large tasks and validating solutions.
- Define the stages, intermediate data formats, and verification steps within the pipeline to identify issues early.
- Guide the technical direction for design automation, improving engineering quality through reviews, standards, and mentoring.
- Integrate AI to both construct this system and apply it within the system's operations.
- Work with diverse teams to achieve a highly automated system while gradually enhancing current workflows.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in computer science or electrical engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
- At least 5 years of experience developing production-grade software.
- Strong background in software engineering, preferably in Go, Python, or C#, including automated testing, continuous integration/delivery, monitoring, and debugging.
- Experience with cloud-native architectures, especially for data-intensive applications, and managing infrastructure in containerized or cloud environments (e.g., EC2, Lambda).
- Proven technical leadership, with a history of simplifying complex domains into clear abstractions and delivering reliable code under tight deadlines.
- Experience using AI coding agents for rapid prototyping, problem-solving, and daily development tasks.
- Ability to quickly learn and become proficient in new programming languages.
Nice to have
- Deep knowledge in geometric engines and CAD, such as building integrated CAD systems or the underlying engines for tools like Onshape, Open CASCADE, build123d/CadQuery, Zoo, Solidworks, Autodesk Fusion/Inventor.
- Understanding of computational geometry engines, including B-rep kernels, meshes, and geometric constraint solvers.
- Experience with procedural and generative design.
- Background in design automation from other industries, like Electronic Design Automation (EDA), including software for HDL synthesis, ASIC design, circuit to PCB design, or CAM/G-code generators.
- Experience with game or physics engines, focusing on their core components.
- Contributions to compilers, interpreters, query planners, or high-level synthesis engines.
- Familiarity with Onshape and writing FeatureScript.
- Practical experience with applied AI in production, including tool-use orchestration, structured generation, and evaluation harnesses.
- Experience with architecture, construction, or mechanical design software.
- Used GPU-accelerated computing.
