Job description
Senior Mechanical Engineer at reframesystems.
About the role
Reframe Systems is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to help shape our factory vision and implement it at our first microfactory, FAB1. This role involves translating system-level concepts into tangible mechanical, robotics, and automation components for replication across future facilities. You will bridge the gap between initial concepts and reliable, industrial-grade hardware.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Oversee the launch of FAB1 by managing critical mechanical subsystems, resolving assembly challenges, supervising equipment setup, and confirming system performance.
- Generate detailed 2D technical drawings for manufacturing and assembly, setting the standard for GD&T to ensure precise part production.
- Conduct Finite Element Analysis on various components like fixtures and end-effectors to verify structural integrity and safety standards before production.
- Design robust mechanical systems using Onshape, ranging from large welded structures and safety enclosures to precise grippers.
- Coordinate with external machine shops and vendors, using detailed drawing packages to ensure timely delivery of quality parts.
- Lead investigations into equipment failures, using data and physical inspection to identify root causes and implement lasting engineering solutions.
- Provide technical guidance to junior engineers, demonstrating best practices in design reviews, documentation, and safety protocols.
Requirements
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related technical field.
- At least 5 years of experience in machine design, industrial automation, or heavy equipment engineering.
- Expert proficiency in CAD software, particularly Onshape, with a portfolio showcasing complex assembly management.
- Strong understanding of GD&T, capable of interpreting, creating, and explaining geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Practical experience with FEA tools like Ansys, SolidWorks Sim, or cloud-native options for validating structural loads and deflection.
- Proven experience in commissioning hardware, bringing designs from concept to full operation in a factory or industrial environment.
- Hands-on ability with tools, including hand tools, power tools, and basic shop equipment for prototyping and modifications.
Nice to have
- Experience with large-scale gantry systems or robotic workcells.
- Background in the construction, automotive, or aerospace industries.
- Experience designing welding fixtures or heavy-duty material handling equipment.
- Familiarity with PDM/PLM systems and version control in fast-paced settings.
Skills & tools
- Onshape
- GD&T (ASME Y14.5)
- FEA (Ansys, SolidWorks Sim, cloud-native tools)
- CAD
- Hand tools, power tools, basic shop equipment (mills, lathes)
Practical notes
Please include a portfolio or examples of previous work, specifically highlighting drawing packages or complex mechanisms, with your application.
