Job description
Mechanical Engineer at reframesystems.
About the role
Join our team as a Mechanical Engineering Co-op, contributing to the development of high-performance housing. This position offers a hands-on experience in our microfactory, focusing on the full engineering cycle from concept to physical prototype. You will work on various projects, designing and building components that support our automated production.
Key facts
What you'll do
- Design and rapidly iterate on mechanical solutions for factory projects, including fixtures, workstations, and material handling systems.
- Fabricate and assemble your own prototypes and production hardware using a range of shop tools.
- Rotate through different active projects within the Mechanical Engineering team, adapting to new contexts and contributing as needed.
- Validate your designs on the factory floor, troubleshoot issues, and refine them for production.
- Create clear CAD models and basic technical drawings for team members or external vendors.
- Gain insight into the connection between mechanical design, robotics, automation, and factory operations in a live manufacturing setting.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, with junior or senior standing preferred.
- Proficient in CAD software such as Onshape, SolidWorks, or Fusion 360, capable of quickly translating ideas into models.
- Competent and safe in operating shop equipment including mills, lathes, laser cutters, welding equipment, 3D printers, and various hand and power tools.
- A quick learner who can acquire new tools, processes, and project information efficiently.
- Possesses a proactive approach, preferring to build and learn from prototypes rather than over-perfecting designs on paper.
- An effective communicator who collaborates well within a team and can follow instructions from multiple engineers across different projects.
- Available for a full-time, semester-long co-op in Billerica, MA, this fall.
Nice to have
- Previous experience in a shop, machine design, or robotics club/competition (e.g., FSAE, FRC, Baja SAE).
- Familiarity with sheet metal, weldments, or fundamental structural design.
- Exposure to manufacturing, construction, or factory automation environments.
- Understanding of GD&T principles.
